    Primer seating depth

Can you seat a primer to deep? I had some failure to fires from both my .223 and .308 military cases that I swagged. I use a RCBS swaging setup on my rock chucker. The cases had small dimples leading me to believe the primers were to deep and the pin couldnt strike them. Am I off base or what?

As long as you didn't deepen the primer pocket and you are using the correct primers, you can't seat the primers "too deep". The primers MUST seat until the anvil bottoms out in the primer pocket. If you don't seat the primer all the way, you will get misfires.

If you are getting light strikes on your primers, first I would shoot some factory ammo and see if you are still getting light strikes.

Most of the time I seat my primers .006 deep. I seated some flush when I got my G-20 and my primers looked exactly as you described. What happened was the energy of the striker was moving the primer and dissipating the energy of the strikers and not igniting the primer. I now seat them as deep as they will go, with no problems.

the primer should be flat or just slightly under the head.

I'm using the Dillon Super Swage 600 and have never had a misfire due to sunken primer

Most issues like you describe are from not seating the primers deep enough.

Folks worry they will set them off by pushing till they bottom out in the case.

The primer should be "just" below flush.

.005-.006 thousandths will do. I have actually seated pistol primers until there is a small indent on them. IPSC shooters do this so the primers are more sensitive and they will not have a FTF in competition.

There is the possibility of seating the primers too hard into the pocket. Usually cannot do this with a handprime tool but can happen with a poorly adjusted/out of adjustment primer on the reloading press (due to the tremendous leverage available). If the primer is seated beyond where it bottoms out, the anvil can crack the priming compound, which could result in a misfire/hangfire.

If there is just the slightest mark on the primer, it is compressed enough to make it more sensitive. Competition only.
