    460 XVR Primers

    Picked up my new 460xvr 8 3/8.
Loaded up some Starline brass with CCI 250 primers, 45gn H110 and 200gn hornadys.

Single action it fired every time.
Double action no boom. It left maybe 60% of a dent as SA.

    Too hard of primer?
Is this common for CCI and this gun?

What primer do you use with 100% certainty?

My buddy's 460xvr had to be sent back to S&W due to light striking. It was obvious the hammer was weak.

Got it back and no problem since. CCI primers also.

Thanks, I was afraid of that.
I have the worst luck, this is the second brand new gun that will have to go back.
The other I never even got to fire, and it had to go back.

It's a shame, the once great Smith and Wesson has really slipped in the QC, and or the cost cutting corners. My old S&W revolvers are MUCH better quality than my newer ones.....It's a shame

          I called S&W after I posted last.
          4 week turn around time.........
I told the lady I just spent over $1300 for your product, and I have to wait 4 weeks for repairs, you can't speed it up? Nope!

          Not real thrilled.......

I am going to keep shooting it, maybe try a softer primer, see if I can find a consistency before shipping it off.

3 week turn around time and a stronger hammer spring installed was the cure.

My experience is Winchester primers seem to be softer cups.

No problems with setting them of in my 460 xvr. Usually, I use tulla or wolf primers.

I primed some brass and ran 10 through.
9 out of 10 fired DA. Progress.

S&W never sent the return label. The broad I talked to had a attitude.

I might buy 2 or 3 different flavors of factory ammo and see how it does.
                Then go from there.

I use Winchester WLR for 460 and 500,

by the way my 460 had two trouble
                  (1) strange metal piece was blocking hammer - removed and filed smooth

                  (2) Firing pin spring was broken at 1.5 turn - spring replaced

I use the CCI LMRP for my 460. I have had the 8 3/8" XVR for 2 weeks now. I have fired over 200 rounds through it and not a single failure to fire. My buddy has had the 5" version for 8 months now and had no issues. I am curious, did this happen when the gun was new or after a few hundred rounds through it?
I have done so much with so little for so long that now I can do almost anything with nothing at all.

Figured I would chime in too on this subject in regards to problems with the 460 XVR. I purchased mine a couple years back now (8 3/8 Barrel), but when I brought it home I was checking how the trigger felt by dry firing it. First dry fire was single action only. Second dry fire was double action. When I dry fired it the second time, I felt something hit my face.

After investigating what it was, it turned out to be the hammer spur. I found the piece on the floor. I was shocked to say the least. Brand new revolver and the hammer broke.

So, that was my problem. I took it out the next day and put close to a hundred rounds of Hornady through it without any problems of light strikes.

I called Smith & Wesson and they sent me a return label to have it fixed. I want to say it was 2 or 3 weeks before I got it back with no charge to me.

Overall, I have been happy with mine and have probably shot 3 hundred of my reloads through it since and haven't had a single issue with it.

                        Brand new, first shots fired.

I did go back to the gun store and BS'd with them about it. One guy says hold on a moment, went in back and came out with a handful of factory ammo.
                        Saved me from buying some.

I ran them though as fast as I could pull the trigger, no errors.

I went and bought some Federal 215 large rifle mag primers.
Primed 15 brass cases, went out in my shop fired them off, no errors.
