    Holy Cow!

I just measured ALL 20 from the same box, and got lengths from 2.808 to 2.821.

When I measured the OAL of 20, the largest spread was 2.808-2.821 or .013
When I measure to the Ogive, the largest spread was 2.192-2.204 or .012

    Update: 6.07pm:
    I measured 3 boxes, two from lot#3162808, 1 from 3162806
The two boxes from the same lot, seemed to have two distinct groups of sizes, like they were loaded on different machines?
The single box Lot#3162806 was fairly consistent, within .003, average OAL was 2.819
The OAL length of one group is around 2.82+/-
the shorter other group leans toward 2.810+/-

"MATCH" ammo? They are pretty far off.
    What are you getting OP?

It's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.

I am getting 2.817" on my calipers with 2 rounds measuring the same...6.5 CM Hornady 140gr ELD Match ammo.

      6:30 update: measured 20 rds from lot#3171772
OAL of box ranges from 2.810-2.820 with 14 rds. between 2.815-2.820
Definitely not match grade in my book but, they shoot 'good' from my RPR.

Well at least I know I'm not alone!

        Thanks for the confirmation.

I've experienced ES of 50+ as well with 140 ELD-M.

That's just the nature of mass production. Multiple dies, multiple machines and of course, multiple measurements on OAL and BTO.

Hornady (or Nosler for that matter) is not considered a "match" bullet in many people's eyes, myself included. Just look at the equipment list from this past Berger SWN.

Berger claims that it is one die to one lot#. In my opinion, that is the right way to do it. That is also why it is important to buy the same lot# if possible.

A good example is older lot #'s of Berger 180 hybrids were measuring out 0.020" longer than newer lot #'s. So, if you had some old bullets and you just ran out and went to go buy more, the new lot# could be different in measurements.

first let me say thanks to EVERYONE for the detailed replies VERY much appreciated!!

PatC415....i do not shoot factory ammo...i was asking because im selling my old comp rifle...it had a 6mm creedmoor barrel on it with 640 rounds through it but no one seemed to be interested.

id hear "oh if it was a 6.5 CM that would shoot factory ammo id buy it in a heart beat"...so i bought a brux blank and had my smith chamber it with a factory spec reamer...the over all length with a 140g ELDM is 2.835 touching the lands and it just got me thinking about the OAL of the factory ammo.

so with all the measurements you guys posted up it shouldnt matter much in this barrel i just didnt want to buy a box of ammo just to measure one piece.

              thanks again guys.

At 2.835" OAL I'm not sure that length will fit in some mags(20 rd Ruger RPR). That length will fit in the Magpul AC mags and other after market mags though.

Better way to measure is to ogive. You need to measure to the point that is being contacted by the seating die. Think about it, the seating die doesn’t contact the tip of the bullet, how would that dimension be perfect? You’d need to control seating die interface diameter to tip of bullet to have the consistent OAL if that’s what you’re looking for (not sure why you would be overly concerned with this in the first place though).

Looks like they are tipped bullets so you have not only the dimension from the interfacing diameter to the metplat, but also the dimension of the plastic tip from the interface plane to the tip of the plastic. Lots of tolerance stacking can occur there especially if multiple dies to mold the tips, multiple machines to make the bullets, multiple machines to seat the bullets. Then you have setup variation because you know they’re running these in a set lot quantity.

i hand load and have for awhile so i know the ogive is a better/more accurate place to measure from...if you read post 7 you will see im asking because i just had a new barrel put on this action...it was chambered with a factory spec reamer but when i took measurements i thought it seemed a little short and sense im selling this rifle i just wanted to make sure that factory ammo was not jammed into the lands so the buyer did not pull a bullet and dump powder if he/she chooses to shoot factory ammo.
