How bad did I screw up

I finished up a 1# jug of Universal powder so I opened up a 8# jug and filled up the powder measure. The 1# jug was bought early 2017 from a local store and the 8# was bought around the same time from powder valley. After pulling the handle a dozen times, I noticed a difference in the powder color/size. Would you dump the whole thing or continue with the reloading session

I have a 1lb bottle of "misc" powders. That's where that powder would go if it were me.

cant describe the smell...... it smells like medicine to me. maybe a acetone or ethanol smell.

I dont think the 8# jug has gone bad. Its been stored indoors in a dry area.

The only difference I see on the containers is the 8# container says "EXTRA CLEAN SHOTGUN HANDGUN POWDER" on the side but the 1# container doesnt say it.

It's fine - this has been an on going issue with Hodgdon for awhile.

But if you need to hear if from the source, send an email to help@hodgdon.com and explain the situation and they will respond.

Im sure its the same powder. I posted a pic of both containers in post 4. Like I said, the only difference is the the #8 container says "EXTRA CLEAN SHOTGUN HANDGUN POWDER" on the side but the 1# container doesnt say it.

The bottom powder is from the #1 container. I only had a small amount of #1 left so I poured it into the hopper and topped it off with the #8 container. So both powders were poured from their containers this morning.

I might email Hogden and see what they say. Though unless Im blind, I dont see a lot number on the 8# container.

There are a few "Recipes" on both containers. Are they the same?

The recipes match on the bottles.

If you're not loading at the top end, I wouldn't worry about it. There can be differences in lots so it's often advised to rework a load if changing lots when working to top end.

IIRC Universal switched from Aussie mfg to somewhere else. There's been discussion of performance and density differences with the plant change. At minimum, check your throw weights during the transition.

Just checked 4-8lb jugs of Hodgdon powders. The lot number is on the back label, left side, about the middle; the numbers are printed top to bottom, perpendicular to the text on the label. However, two of my jugs do not have a number at all (interestingly, out of 2 jugs of Varget, only one had a number.; H110 was the other without the lot number.)

Dump the hopper back into the 8# bottle. Shake and refill the hopper. This will dilute the remaining 1# lot sufficiently.
