    Trim Die??

Okay I've been reloading awhile but never heard of a trim die. I bought some old RCBS dies for 30-06 about a year ago and hoarded them until now when I purchased an M1 Garand. Now I have the die set out and it has three dies. One is a "trim die" and the other two are seater and sizing dies. What's the trim die for?

Trimming the case. Put the die in the press according to the instructions, run a case up into the die, and you literally use a file to file down the case so it's flush with the face of the trim die. The die is hardened steel, so it's supposed to withstand contact with the file.

Obviously, this isn't a very optimal way to trim cases, but it 'works' in a sense.

Well these dies were from 1965 so I can see that I guess. I think I'll just use my little trimmer lathe or whatever that came in my deluxe reloading press kit instead. That other method seems ghetto.

They work very well, if you have a good sharp file and know how to use it. Much faster than one of the hand driven rotary trimmers. If I had a thousand cases to trim and the choice between a hand driven rotary trimmer or a trim die, there's no question I'd be using the trim die.
