    45-70 loads

Been messing with 50gr of Varget and has a nice kick to it but not liking the unburnt kernals left behind in the action, chamber and barrel.

picked up some RL 7 and 3031. For starters i went with 33-37gr and found it was really accurate at 50yds with 36.5gr.

My question is can anyone help me find more load data for 3031? It's for an 1895 Marlin SBL. 405gr lee RF mold, powder coated so im using cast lead data i found on google images from a laser cast manual that has 34-38.5gr for the flat point 405. I stopped at 36.5 because i had trouble with my chrony and because the load data doesn't state if this is for cast lead or fmj.

my other resource is the lyman 48th manual, doesn't show data for the #457193 405 when using 3031. Above it there is a 405 jacketed sp that has 3031. has it at 46-51.5gr and i've read that you subtract 10% of jacketed data if you're shooting cast lead so that equates to 41.4-46.4. Can someone explain how there is such a large variation between the laser cast data and the lyman? That is why im asking for help with load data.

I joined Ammoguide interactive for just this very question. Although I have 16 reloading manuals some very early, I always find what I need faster on this site.

I've always had good results shooting 405gr cast with BLC-2 in my winchester 1886 (modern)

Favorite .45-70 powder for heavy bullets (400gr and up)

Hodgdon #27 does not show BL-C(2) loads for the 45-70. However, Hodgdon #26 does.

Marlin 1895 45-70 22" barrel unless otherwise noted

        405 grain bullet
        35 grains BL-C(2) TRAPDOOR MAXIMUM 1354 fps 16,400 CUP 26" barrel
        54 grains BL-C(2) START 1652 fps
        58 grains BL-C(2) MAXIMUM 1786 fps

        500 grain bullet
        35 grains BL-C(2) TRAPDOOR MAXIMUM 1191 fps 17,600 CUP 26" barrel
        49 grains BL-C(2) START 1448 fps
        53 grains BL-C(2) MAXIMUM 1623 fps

wow thank you so much! gonna be pretty interesting to go up to 46gr as i thought 36.5gr was mild. i'll work up 5 loads for every +1.0 gr i step up. 4 shot group of sled, 1 shot standing so i can feel the recoil for myself.

one last concern, because im seating the bullets with an OAL of 1.250, does this mean i'll be reaching the max pressure values sooner than at the recorded 46gr max?

New to the 45-70 arena and looking for mold & load info. Thinking of 300 gr and 405 gr bullets

              P.O Ackley books show 48gr of 3031 with a 300g bullet at 1675fps and 58g at 2015fps, 58g with a 400g at 1900fps
These were listed for a 1895 Marlin and a Model 86 Winchester

currently rolling with the 400gr Lee mold only $24 on amazon.
as for load data first you need to find exactly what type of projectiles you'll want to shoot. jacket, plated, lead, what type of rifle you're shooting, etc. And at the end of the day don't take my load data or others and go off and use it without comparing to other's from a manual.
