I would disagree with this. Many of us shoot plenty of powder coated lead and plated bullets through our semi autos with zero problems. They are both cheap and make for great practice ammo, if nothing else.

While I have semi's from 25 APC up , I have found copper
flecks and powder coating in the 41 [ I don't shoot it much ]
      357 , 44 and 50 D E's gas chambers .
Maybe the coating have iMproved , but all my autos are gas operated and the few pennies I / we would save would be lost
in cleaning costs [ equipment costs if I rolled my own .
If you have a sonic , put the barrel in it for maybe 1/2 hour
      and see .
Plated are a guessing game on how hard / thick the plating
is and then destroying a few to see crimping die .
Yes you have the same hardness problem with jacketed , but I have a hardness gage . What I was trying to say to O P is that
it is easier / safer to just start with FMJ and then he can switch over after a while .

Powder coating bullets puts a spin on the bullet appearance. It is something new, shooters like it, fine.

A lot of competitive action style shooting of today doesn't go much beyond 12 to 15 yards at the most. And the target area that they shoot at for maximum value is generous in size. I refer to it as Close In Zone Shooting. All shooting is good so what the heck. Coated bullets and plated bullets look cool so go for it.

As for me, I'm just an old dude set in his ways. When I make pistol ammo it will fit in any pistol of respected caliber and it will be both accurate and consistent. The days of making anything less than excellent pistol ammo is about over. I do have some back stock I need to load up and hose down the area with. The newer shooters will do what they are going to do. So as long as everyone shoots safely and is having fun all is good.

I buy in bulk so jacketed for rifle and most pistols. The largest order I've made was 30,000 projectiles I split it 3 ways with friends and still have thousands.

I have been part of group buys in the millions.

I buy Extreme bullets plated for 45ACP and 9MM I had some in 30Carbine but hated the performance at 1100fps

Anything I am going to use for hunting will be premium and costly.
