    mighty armory decap

Anyone used one of these ? [ THE MAGNUM ]
I [ we ] broke another Lee universal pin last night .
I ordered 2 of of the RCBS but they have not come yet .
    I / we do 15 calibers and on bottle necks , 1st I decap ,
next station sizes before cleaning .
I have come across some 45's that were crimped .
    So I need 3 - 223 , 308 and 45 .
Has anyone used with the small 45 ACP primers ?

I've probably decapped four thousand .223 cases using the same pin in a universal decapping die. Some of the primers required a lot of pressure but so far I have not broken a pin. Spares are still sitting in their packaging.

Based on a totally unscientific analysis, it seems to me the reason people break pins is because either they apply too much pressure on a pin that has contacted the web rather than the primer, or they lower the press handle too fast (a polite way of saying it's being slammed down).

I lower the pin until it makes contact, then steadily increase the amount of downward pressure I apply to the handle (I have an RCBS single stage press) until either the primer pops out or the amount of force seems excessive.

A few times I've applied enough force that the bench starts creaking, which means it's time to stop and find out why the primer won't come out. Sometimes the reason I have to apply so much force is because there wasn't a primer in the case to begin with and the die has bottomed out (I'm working fast and not looking at the bottom of the case first). Occasionally it's probably a Berdan primer. Other times the case is not aligned correctly in the shell holder.

I try to squeeze the primer out. If I treated the press handle like a hammer, I'm sure I'd be breaking pins. Think of it this way: if you're trying to use your car to push another vehicle, you approach slowly because if you came up to it at anything approaching normal driving speed, you'd wreck both cars.

BTW, I'm not suggesting you're slamming the press handle. Just trying to explain what's worked for me.

I have broken one pin on the Lee universal de-primer, I've got 3 or 4 spares, but never needed another one. When de-priming with a sizing die, the die holds things centered, not so much with the universal die.

Of course, none of the above does anything to answer your question...

I have broken a lee decapping pins on 5.56 before and bought a 3 pack of lee replacements as I still have a few thousand 556 to shoot and reload. Since that purchase I found out that there are third party hardened pins available (e.g. squirreldaddy 3 for $17)

I hadn't heard of The Magnum so I'll stay tuned for any feedback from others.

Thanks , I have nephews and nieces that reload here .
          90% of cases I deprime are pistol . [ by hand ]
          My nephews do the 308 / 762 and 2 nieces do the 223 .
Since they are cheap , lots of range brass and some
          staked are picked up .
Not sure why pins are breaking - not seat properly , base
bent cocking case , staked , going to fast .
It is just APIA to stop and replace pins . Lee is good about
replacing the pins , it is just removing and seating up new
          one .
I already ordered 2 of the RCBS and 2 more die holders for
the loadmaster when I saw the ad at bottom for the mighty
          armory decap .
I was wondering if I should just get one and try or wait and
see how the RCBSones work out

Just buy the 3 pk replacement for the Lee. You can find them on eBay also.
No matter which brand you buy, that little pin will break.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

If you are using range pick-ups, then a berdan-primed case may have gotten into your lot

Regarding decapping pin thickness from my RCBS FL dies range from 0.069" to 0.070"

My Lee Universal Decapping Die has a thickness of 0.069"

I decap 223, 308, and 30-06 and have never bent a decap pin from FL sizing or using the Lee Decap die but then again I don't use range pick-ups.

I have mighty armory decap die. I bent the pin on a berden primed case and was able to straighten it and deprime another 500 crimped 5.56 cases with no problems.

Yes my nephews and nieces pick up range brass . Me , I
                    will pick up 45 , 25 , 32 and 380 APCs . If someone is
                    using a 44mag or 50 AE - I always ask .
I have found a few 45 and 380's that were crimped , but not
really a problem - I decap pistol cases by hand . It is the
bottle necks that are breaking / bending the pins , but the
loadmaster has more leverage than the frankford .

The decapping die works, have Dillon, Lyman and have bent the pins
many times, The MA decapping die works great on those stubborn
TAA cases that seems to bend the Dillon pins. Also MA will be coming
out with a .223 die set in mid Feb. Here is a code to get some money
off, don't know how long it will work for. "WEEKDAY" give it a shot it
                      works at time of this.

I have two RCBS universal decap dies and have decapped countless thousands of cases. My son used them and broke two pins in one session...

Just checked it on laptop, put items in cart,
go to check-out, right hand side of check-out
screen box says "discount" put in the code click
"apply" it shows the discount, send Wayne a

on tablet (Android based) "cart" then "check out" then "Discount"
hit arrow to apply it, then it will discount it and show
the code you used, just verified it.

Sorry for the delay I don't keep alot of logins
on my tablet, had to get on the laptop

I tried several things and decided even at 20% , the
discount would be 7 dollars .
I ordered one . If it works out , I will get a couple more .
[ I might be able to convince nephews / nieces we need
them , but one of them will have a birthday anyway . ]
What I do is pop out primers and size on press then clean .
Since I use tool heads , I keep 3 for the 308 and 2 for the
                              223 . [ I also have 2 for the 45 - had 3 but way more so .
308s a nephew bought another set of 308 dies .
FYI - I use the white PVC couplings with caliber printed on
                              label for reloading .
Depriming gets the gray coupling with caliber printed on
                              label for reloading .
