9mm in New XD Open On Last Round Failure

Hey all, just wanted some opinions here . . .

    I'm doing the following load:

    4 gn Bullseye
    124 gn RN Xtreme

I tested this load out today and it seems to run pretty well, very snappy.
I had a few fail to stay opens on the last round but the ammo feeds well.

Do you think I should up the grains to 4.2 or do you think this is just because of the new spring in my brand new XD? I figure increasing grain load shouldn't be detrimental, however the current load is really accurate, snappy and burns clean.

I've only had a chance to run about 250 rounds through the new gun yet, so I'm reaching out on opinions as to whether I up the load a bit or if I just leave it be and wear the spring in more.

I have had zero issues with any of my XD pistols, and your load is at the very bottom end for Bullseye with a 124gr bullet. Load some at 4.1 or 4.2 and see if it corrects the problem.

Thanks, Scotty and 17+1! I was just making sure I was right in thinking I was using too light a load. I only used to load 38s and 357 and that was 15 years ago. . .

Using regular ammo (federal 115gn FMJ) does seem to lock the slide for the most part. I have had the issue a couple of times with that as well, but not consistently and not recently (only in the first 100 rnds).

I'm going to load up some 4.2 tomorrow and try it out again.

If you have any load recipes for 9mm ammo, I'm all ears. I really like bullseye but am open to suggestions.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

            Thanks for the info.

I do ride the slide when shooting, but I did test this by lowering my grip specifically to see if I was causing it, but got a positive result. I think this is great info though, a friend of mine was having similar problems with his grip and was causing this issue on his 5 inch XD about a month ago.

I had the same issue with my xd40 when reloading. Just kept increasing the powder until it started cycling fine but lock wasn't engaging, then kept going until it was reliable, then went up another .2 gr and that was my min. Load for that powder and that gun. As long as you are within listed min-max you are fine.

I had that happen to me. It’s usually when I ride the lower end of the charge. You can see the difference once you step up .2 grn. It should cycle much better. That being said if it doesn’t cycle well at 4.0 and does at 4.2. I would so to load at 4.4 if your using dropper. Last thing you want is for the round not to work.

Make sure all charges are safe

                  Update:

Hey all, just wanted to let you know I tested out with 4.2 gn and it locked fine so I believe we found the issue.

                  thanks for all the feedback!

When in doubt, use more gun powder!

Be aware that it's not hard to accidentally ride the slide release with your support or strong hand thumb (right handers) on the XD. In fact, I still occasionally do it all these years later.

Result - no hold open on empty mag. Other than my very first obviously very light experimental loads when I first started reloading, I've never had too light a charge to cycle the XD and hold back slide on empty.

Something to look at before you change your recipe.

I had this happen with my SR45 and it turned out to be a light spring in the mag . It was failing to lift the slide stop adequately . I have two XD handguns 9mm & 45 . Neither have had this issue , in fact they have been my most reliable firearms I've ever owned so your issue actually surprises me .

Anyways thought I'd throw that out there . Maybe check if anything in interfering with the slide stop fully engaging .
