I've been handloading since 1978, and Have and use a Ohaus 10-10 scale, an RCBS 1500 Combo[since sold] and the RCBS Uni-Flow. I've run a good number of powders thru that Uni-Flow for rifle[mostly] and pistol. Today, started loading for my .45auto using "Clays". At 3.8gr setting, I cannot get that thing to cycle. Meaning the handle will not do it's job. Thinking the charge just may be too small/light. But, that just doesn't sound right. You guys got any thoughts on this?

Uni-Flow issue.

Sounds to me as if the stem that controls the powder charge is screwed in to far.Back out charging stem and see what happens.Keep it simple! -

Correct. Backing the stem out, it works as should. Anything over 6.0gr, works like a charm. Guess it doesn't take light charges. Damn!Comment

Uniflow has a large and a small cylinder. Which one are you using?

Not sure. When I bought it, maybe 1980?, it only came with whatever was in it.
So, no idea there. I don't have a "baffle, but, I'm going to make one and see if that helps. If not, back to the 10-10, till I find something else. Crap.Comment

Must be the large cylinder, you said you mostly load rifle. have you been loading big charges in 300 Mag or anything similar? I think small cylinder only goes up to ~50gr of most powders.sigpic"That's more suspicious than a nun doing squats in a cucumber field!"Comment

.30-'06, 30-30 and .270 Win. Pistol: .45auto and .38spl. Can't recall having issues with pistol charges before, but, maybe. Dang. I'll figure this out. Could be something real simple I'm over looking. Going to clean and use some dry graphite and see what that does.Comment

I do indeed have the large cavity drum.[#9010]. I'm going to call RCBS tomorrow morning and see what I can work out. If that doesn't pan out, maybe I'll get the "Lee Perfect Powder measure for Pistols" $24.00 at Midway. Beats hand weighting every charge.Comment

Talked to a tech at RCBS this morning and all he could say is buy the small drum and switch back and forth as needed. Hmm. Think I'll go with the Lee PPM. Use the Uni-flow for rifle, the Lee for pistol. Any of you guys have one of those Lee "Perfect Powder Measure"? If so, what's the opinion? Thanks.Comment

It works great. Extremely consistent.
No issue except for static cling.
This is only a problem after cleaning out the hopper.
I actually use an old static gun that I used to use on LPs (For anyone under 40 years old, LP is a Long Playing Vinyl Music Album) to remove the static charge.
Haven't blown myself up yet.Comment

Joy! Made myself a home made baffle out of stencil board. Just wanted to see if that would help at all. It did. A lot. I could drop 3.8gr of Clays, no problem.
Now, I'll make another one out of some stronger material. Didn't think the damn thing would work. Surprised me! I'm guessing the baffle helps take the "weight" off the measuring chamber on such a light load. Alright. Now to have a beer and get ready for Alabama vs Georgia at 5pm.Comment
