    progressive press reloading dilemma

    So here is my dilemma,

I am new to the reloading wold and have just started with my single stage press for 6.5 Grendel.

i won a slightly used Lee Pro 1000 set up in 38 spl in a raffle a short time ago. I don't have anything that shoots 38 spl. I really want to start reloading 223 but i do shoot 9 mm and could always use cheaper ammo.

My question is what should i do with this press?
#1 convert over to 223 (what i really want to relaod)
#2 convert to 9mm and relaod for the savings
#3 sell it and take the money towards a press that will work better for what i want? also what press do you suggest in the comments.

    Thanks

How many rounds a month do you plan on reloading in total?

probably about 1k nothing in huge volume.

although this will increase the time in which any investment into parts is paid off.

I say you load for 223. You won t be saving much if you go with 9mm. This also depends on how much ammo you have saved up and what it will cost in the months to come

I would say dedicate it to 38spl and pick up a Dillon 550 or 650 for 9mm and 223.

I load my 9mm for $90 per 1k with copper plated bullets, cast lead is even cheaper.

I would sell it and get a Dillon 650 with case feeder for Your pistol rounds. Personally, I prefer to use a single stage for my rifle type rounds.
I own the Dillon and 3 single stage presses. One is a RCBS Rockchucker I use for sizing. Another is a RCBS Jr(and old press) I use for seating bullets and some pistol rounds(sizing and belling and seating) because it has more feel when seating bullets. Then a Hornady set up for 50bmg.

I hand prime all rifle brass and some pistol brass. It helps accuracy. I use one of the electronic powder dispensers/scales for rifle loads and some pistol loads. Others I use a RCBS Uniflow powder dispenser. I have a special one for the 50bmg.

Batch process your brass. I also deburr the rifle Flash holes and chamfer the necks as well as trim as needed.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Keep the press for 9mm. If you sell it, you won’t get enough for a Dillon or single stage press for 223

Get a hand primer for all of your calibers, then single stage the rest. Keep things simple and I like dedicated.

                        IMO the right answer is:

convert to 9mm and run a few batches.

THEN convert to 223 and run a few batches.

THEN do option 4, 5, 6, etc. While you are playing with options 4+, you can ALWAYS configure the press for either 223 or 9mm and process a bunch.

It is never ever bad practice to have 3-4 ways to get your reloading done. 9mm is just better to start with because bottleneck cartridges can be finicky on a progressive, but never 9mm.

Um buy all the parts to run both 223 and 9mm on it. Unless there's something I don't know about the Lee 1000 that makes it so you can't change cartridges on it???

Personally I don't shoot enough 9mm to make it worth while to reload it. However, I love having a progressive for 223.

                              Sell nothing.

Buy new Redding Single Stage Press.
