    Win 231 & primers

So.... my uncle used to load a lot of pistol, mostly 45acp, 38 special, and 44mag. Recently, I was over there and was chatting with him and found out he gave his Dillon setup to one of his sons out of state on a visit over the holidays SEVERAL YEARS AGO. My cousin didn't want to hassle w/ the powder & primers (and bullets) so they are still here.

Looks to be two 5lb cans and 3 1lb cans of WIN 231, plus 10K large and 5k small pistol primers - and LOTS of bullets (all kinds, ever hear of Billy's Bullets?).

BEFORE I think about buying a press... how can I tell if the stuff is still OK? Gotta be several years old, stored in a file cabinet in the garage. I suppose the bullets would be fine...

If the primers are still in their original packaging and they didn't get any water or contaminants on them, they are probably OK. If the powder is still in sealed (unopened) containers they'll also probably be OK. You can check by smelling them (should NOT have a sour or sulfur order) and if they are not clumped together.
    Luck favors the prepared.

The original battle plan did not survive initial contact with the enemy.

Woo hoo, that's not like sniffing GLUE is it?

OK... the primers are Winchester Small & Large Pistol, still in their original trays/boxes. All the powder is sealed, save one 1lb can which felt a little light so I opened it up to "sniff"... nothing bad.

Hmmm... maybe it's time to get a Dillon? I'm normally a lazy-*** and just buy ammo by the case, but there's gotta be 5K in just 45acp bullets alone... plus I always thought it made good SHTF sense to be able to make your own. Although I don't know where I'll find the time.

Dude, you've got most of the vital components that folks are waiting weeks for! All you need is the brass, which is readily available, then time to pick out what press and other equipment you want/can afford--and that stuff isn't backordered like powder and primers.

As for the time element, didn't someone once say, " You can sleep when you're dead"?

Billy Bullets are hard cast lead bullets that are moly coated rather than lubed.

I had an associate that loaded them about 15 or so years ago, I think they were made in Richmond, CA then (Phoenix, AZ now). I shot around 500 rounds that were loaded with them in a 9mm Ruger with pretty fair success. They didn't seem to lead up the barrel, but I don't actually know how fast they were being pushed.

                That makes sense now...

Makes sense now... My uncles in Hercules... he must've had a contact with the Richmond setup before they moved. They kinda look like semi-wadcutter Nyclads in 45acp. Time to pull out my Blue Press magazine and get familliar with pressing. I actually DO have brass that I've just kept from shooting sessions... plus my uncle has given me several bags of 45, 38, and 44 brass and his vibrator/cleaner with lots of "corn cob" media. He's pretty much just handing stuff over as he digs it up in the garage...

Maybe a Square deal with 3 sets of dies for 45acp, 38 special, and 44 mag... my wife & kid are sure gonna miss me...
