Leaving a die long and modifying a shell holder definitely precludes the use of the whole set of Redding shell holders of doing their job properly with the long die.

By design, the comp shell holders are longer than a standard shell holder in 0.002" steps, allowing a person to size cases up to 0.010" longer shoulder length than a standard shell holder will allow while maintaining the die's stopping point against the shellholder.
Maintaining the die-to-shellholder stopping point ensures that press frame stretch does not give inconsistent shoulder lengths from varying levels of brass hardness as usually happens when the die is floating off the shellholder at the top of the sizing stroke.
