Casting 9mm Luger

I am in the process of purchasing equipment for casting 9mm Luger. After the bullet is cast, and died, what sort of coating is there to spray/dip on the bullet itself? The bullets I am currently loading are coated with some sort of moly or teflon? Any input?

Most molds drop the bullets slightly oversized. The bullets then need to be run through a lubri-sizer, which sizes the bullet to the correct diameter and fills the lube grooves.

Lee has a mold that drops bullet that can be lubed with their liquid Alox in a bag, but I've never tried them.

The bullets were are currently loading are probably Bear Creek or Precision. They spray on a "moly coating" on them.

Where can I find the spray moly coating?? I am loading Bear Creek right now, but the last batch I had to wait a long time for. So I am hoping that I can get some practice in on casting I can get my own cranked out.

Midway used to sell moly powder, you would put a small amount in a dedicated tumbler and a few BB's and the cast bullets... tumble away. Seemed to work good, don't know if there is a better way now or not.

i use the lee 124 tl mold to make bullets i run them all through the 356 size die that comes with its own lee liquid alox

the little bottle of lube is enough to do about 3000

so its a good little kit to try out to find if you like casting

BOHOKI: regarding the Lee 124tl mold, the midwayusa description says that the bullets USUALLY don't need to be sized, Is that the case with your bullets coming out of the mold? are they sized correctly straight from the mold?

if that is the case: would you be saving a processing step by going from mold to tumble lube(granted you are using a tumbler to lube the bullets)
, a great time saver?

Will the Lee liquid Alox lube work ok for non-Lee bullets with wide lube grooves? It would seem like their formulation might smoke less than wax lubes.

I use the Lee molds as Bohoki does. I loaded them both sized and just as they come out of the mold with no real difference noted in results.

The real time saver is that you don't even need to put them in a tumbler. Just place the bullets in a plastic bowl or similar, squirt in the lube, shake the bowl around until the bullets are covered, and then spread them out on wax paper or plastic sheet to dry overnight.

Yup, I use the same method as above, but you might have to treat them twice.

i size them through the die to make sure they are perfectly round and tumble lube does not use a "tumbler" you just lube them by tumbling them in a little bucket

ive used the tumble lube on wide groove lyman cast bullets so far so good it still smokes like a high noon shootout though

i still put them through the sizer. you guys want a tip on the lee liquid alox.


Do this when the wife is not home. i take out the cookie sheet put on a layer of wax paper. then tumble a good 500 or so bullets. lay them on the cookie sheet. Then turn on the oven to 200 degrees. then put them in the oven for 30 minutes. just make sure the fan is on high and the windows are open. After 30 minutes i take them out. then take them outside and slide the wax paper and bullets off as one on the table then do another batch really quick. By the time i get the second batch ready and in the oven i go to the first batch and they are good to go. the lube is dried up and i can handle the bullets. when the second set is done i take them outside. turn off the oven. Turn the fans on high. open the doors and windows and pray to the almighty she doesnt smell anything.
