Reloading 6.8 SPC - Recipe Request

I will start reloading this round soon. I would like to pick the brains of calgunners that are already reloading this round. Which powder? How much powder? What bullet weight for a 1:10 barrel twist? My rifle has mid length gas system.

Care to clarify or expand on temp sensitivity? Most of the reading/searching gave AA2200 top marks.

he read it on the internet.

had a guy tell me Retumbo was temp sensitive, well after having ammo sit and bake in the sun on one day then take it to an indoor range the next 40˚ temp swing same loads. velocity only varied 15 fps... you so unless you know for a fact and have shot the ammo cold and hot don't believe a word

Reloading 6.8 SPC - Recipe Request

I don't have a barrel for 6.8 SPC yet, but I would start with CFE BLK powder. I have been happy with it for 300 AAC and 7.62x39. I like it when you can bridge many different calibers with one powder.

Also, this manual has a boatload of 6.8 recipes.

I'm finding that the higher pressures are much more accurate with 6.8 than other cartridges. We are consistently looking for the highest pressures we can get before deformation of the primers (cratering, swipes and so forth).
Work up your loads and watch your cases closely. Everyone's rifle is different!

I've worked up loads for 110 grain bullets to 130 grain bullets.
I will also use .277 dia. 270 caliber bullets. I use the barns TXS(?) 130 grain 270 cal bullets. They only work well when pushed very hard. But when they do, they work very well.

The 6.8 gets complicated. Folks are also lengthening the rounds to require special mags that have the front cut out to accommodate the extra length.
It gives you the opportunity to load >30 grains. I've loaded rounds with 32 grains. Again, work them up and watch your cases/primers. Blowing up your rifle makes for a bad day.

AA2200 does get top marks for performance, but I sight in during the summer heat and hunt in snow. If I can eliminate a variable, I will. I see no need to reinvent the wheel.

Thank you for the link. What does ~90fps difference look like at 100 to 200 yard?

I am curious what you load with now.

Any preferred round for hunting? I read 95 grain Barnes TTSX were also top mark.

The 90 fps might not be a lot, but the accuracy and POI can change too. Sometimes a lot, sometimes very little. I don't care to waste the time or bullets to find out, and shooting in freezing temps in so cal is not always convenient.

95TTSX is optimized for the 6.8. I use H322. I tried H4198 but accuracy was better with the H322.

Have taken 2 deer and a coyote so far. Deer were close, neck shots, bullets not recovered.

Maybe it goes without saying but you want your barrel chambered in 6.8spc2 or 6.8x43. The spc2 chamber is the modern standard and much hotter than the plain old spc. Unfortunately most commercial loads are turned back to spc standards so sometime with an early gun doesn't blow himself up.

Thank you all for your advice. I always like to have 2 sources of bullets and powder. I am going with the advice of God_Bless_America for AA2200 powder. Reloader 7 has similar burning rate to AA2200. So does VV N120. The latter seems to be a powder that requires higher pressure loads. No data is available for N120 by the manufacturer. I will risk starting with 7.62X39 for N120.

As for bullets fired from 16" barrels, I'll go with 95 gr. with a 1.81 stability factor, which is good news. As a second source, I'll use Nosler 100 gr. Accubond with a stability factor of 1.69 Both should produce good results.

I feel a lot more confident now. Once the load is developed, I'll experiment with seating depth to get the tightest groups possible.

I will return and post results in a few months.
