Has anyone here actually tried to make black powder? I ask because, many moons ago in my youth, I tried every which way to make this stuff and make it go boom. This was way before the days of internet. Finally just gave up and went to Simms hardware in Sac and bought some FFF. Way easier to use in my .50 cal Hawken.

I made good black powder when I was in High school, to use in canons we made in machine shop class, worked well, a little more smoke than store bought.

Like you, I bought powder of all sorts from Simms hardware, and I still remember the last 4 digits in their phone number was 3030.....ah the good old days.....

Although BP can be home made, personally I would not do it, there is a reason that pyrodex is more common- the BP factories keep blowing up . it is very sensitive to static, friction, etc. not worth the risk in a non survival situation

It's FUD, don't worry about it. There is no one pound restriction but you'll never convince a regulation junkie of that. Even though you can buy 10 pounds at any BP retailer in CA...

Again, it's easy to mix the chemicals to make it burn but it's not easy to make it work like shooting grade BP. I just saw that episode "Arena" again a month or two ago and laughed when I saw Kirk "measuring" the proportions with his hands and stuffing diamonds into a plant tube as a barrel to use against the Gorn. Then when the projectiles hit the Gorn they didn't seem to affect the rubber suit at all.

Oh well, it seemed pretty good when it was first aired. The mortar they used was the coolest thing I remembered when I first saw it.

Personally I'm going to leave that kind of thing up to a professional.
( both the black powder making and the dancing with Kirk.)

Because at this point in time it's not cost effective when measured up against risk. At least to me.

Although I could see doing it once or twice too put that skill set in your back pocket.

5lbs. MAX black powder, you may be able to buy more, but 5 is max. Although, down this page for 12102 it does mention 1lb. so not sure, but I think the max you can have is 5lb.

Wrong again. You people always ignore the very first chapter in your irrelevant explosives regulation where it specifically states that powders used for ammunition are not explosives. Period. That means this regulation does not apply. Period. In other words, that's where you stop. Unless you just can't stand the idea that people might have some freedom after all and need to make stuff up.

In the past I have ordered blackpowder 25 lbs at a time. Never got a knock on my door from Johnny Law.

Nowadays I don't shoot as much as I used to but the store where I buy my stuff now doesn't care how much I buy at one time. They do record the number from each container into a log book.

I was in Nevada last month and I stopped to buy some smokeless powder. While I was there I asked about blackpowder and if Nevada had any limits.

Yes, they definitely should take that BS down. It was obviously written by a hand wringing regulation junkie and it is ignored by every law enforcement agency and every BP retailer in the state.

the regulation is set by fire code. If you want to know how much black powder you can legally have at any given time check with your local fire marshal. It is different for each county.

No one cares how much you buy in California either. The law in question is one regarding storage. You can buy all you want, you just have to follow the state and local fire codes when you store it.
