    Twist rate for 36gr

You guys think 1/9 is too fast for 36gr or 30gr in 223 out of a 24" barrel?

I know 1/12 is ideal for these light guys approaching 4kfps but I'm having a hard time finding a rifle to buy that has a slower barrel than 1/9 these days. Any thoughts?

Have a barrel made with a twist of 1/12.
    Keep it simple!

You're fine. I've shot plenty of 36gr out of a 1/8 twist with good groups. Your 1/9 will do the same.

I shoot them out of a 1-10 just fine. Or you could use 50gr ones. They also shoot fine in my 1-10 barrel.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Sounds like you're trying to make an AR into a varmint rifle. AR barrels are generally designed around AR functions. Purpose built varmint rifles are designed around varmint rifle functions.

Barnes varmint grenades? You can try the 36 and see how they do, but a 50gr is likely more suited. IIRC they spec 1:10 min twist rate. My Kimber of Oregon wasn't fond of them.

I'm looking at a Tikka Varmint rifle. The varmint comes with a 1/8 twist. The older T3 was available with a 1/10. Just want to make sure its good with 36's to vaporize some squirrel.

Catalogue shows 8 and 12 available.

Some forums indicate a 10 was available at some point.

The integrity of the jacket (oft an issue of spinning too fast) shouldn't be in effect for a sintered bullet like the varmint grenade.

My .264 mag with 1:9 didn't like light bullets pushed moderately fast. Sighting it in at 50 got me zeroed, but when moved out to 100 they could be off paper and the ones which did hit the paper showed they were tumbling.

Nog enough data. Is this a 223 or 22-250 or what? And do you intend to shoot jacketed bullets or lead free?

With a 1-8" barrel why not just use the 50gr VG bullets. They will take out squirrels just as well and maybe better. You could try a few 36gr to see how they work if you really want to use them.

Haunt GunBroker and look for a Howa 1500 SA in 223. I believe
the older used ones are all 1:12 twist. I just got one to reload for and emulate the
.22 Mag/22Hornet while being re-loadable ... without the Hornet brass issues.

Get the bull barrel. These are heavy, perhaps best for target shooting,
which is my only interest, but if you are the John Wayne type and want to
run around in the bushes, you should be good to go. My 52C weighs a lot more.

I plan next, to add the same gun in 7.62X39 for cartridge development
                      in that caliber as well.
