I think I'd go with a piece of carpet with a very short nap. Don't use shag 'cause you'll never find anything. The carpet in our house is short nap and I'm pretty sure I could find primers in it. Best part is, primers will not bounce around the way they would on linoleum, masonite, plastic or even a canvas tarp.

The only problem with carpet is primers will burn it if your vacuum has a beater brush on it. If you have a shop vac you are good to go. My ex-wife ran over a couple dropped primers in some shag carpet and I got that insane phone call at work you never want to get.
And if your using graphite on your cases and spill it forget about it ever coming out.
Other than that your good to go. If that would be a concern just get a carpet sample to put down as a barrier.

Any loose primer has to be considered live until you know that it isn't. And if you know that the primer isn't live then how did it end up where it isn't supposed to be?

A clean and squared away reloading area is a important part of Reloading Professionalism.

You will eventually spill powder maybe a case full or a larger amount.

If you have a Chargemaster, you will, at some point, attempt to fill the hopper without closing the drain. Possibly multiple times.

Simple----- Vacuum cleaner.
Been doing so for many, many years.
No problems.

Do not over think it.

When I was single, I reloaded in apartments and leased condos with carpeting. I just vacuumed the area and had no problems. However, I only lost a few primers (primers are fairly easy to find and pick up on carpeting) and the amount of powder I spilled was usually a very small amount. I have been reloading since the mid 70's, and I don't recall ever dropping an amount of powder that would be of any concern. As Divernhunter said, "Do not over think it."

I just vacuumed regularly with a bagless vacuum. Never had any issues but I also made sure to dump the canister after each cleanup,

Thanks all. The roll of linoleum followed by the vacuum will probably work.
I just didn't want to start off any fireworks in the vacuum cleaner.

A vacuum cleaner can explode if it is used to clean up black powder.

BUSTED
At the bomb range, the Build Team set up a carpeted floor and set up 7 vacuums of different types to suck up 1 pound (450 g) of black powder. None of them exploded after 60 seconds, prompting the team to declare the myth busted; they then used the powder to blow up one of the vacuums.

I believe smokeless powder would be similar.. and I hardly believe people are spilling a pound at a time.

You would have to dump and awful lot for it to be a problem even if it did light off but if you're worried about it just vacuum with a carpet cleaner.

The powder doesn't ignite from the vacuum it's the primers that go off when the beater has them bouncing around and they leave a black circle on the carpet.
It you put down something hard you will spend all day looking for it after it bounces around.
Nothing wrong with adding a second layer of short carpet on top of your good carpet to protect it from the inevitable.
And vacuuming up a pound of black powder for 60 seconds is like throwing lit matches into a jeep can of gas.
All the ones that get wet and go out don't mean much compared to the one that ignites it.

I've read warnings that say not to vacuum spilled powder. I've vacuumed small amounts of powder previously & never had a problem but just to be safe, after I was aware of the possible hazard, I started using a broom & dustpan. The spare bedroom I reload in had indoor/outdoor carpeting but I took it out to make cleanup easier. If you can't remove the carpeting, the suggestion about covering it with plastic or linoleum is good.

One of my good friends dropped some primers on the carpet and did not find all of them. He got that phone call from his wife when she vacuumed and the beater bar hit them. Ended up buying a new vacuum.
