    300 win mag formula question...

So I'm trying to develop a load for SCPRC and I was wondering what you guys thought of this one.

Remington Brass. Federal large rifle magnum primers (I'll go with standard if I can find some by then). 168gr SMK. 73 gr. RL-19.

This should give me an initial speed of 3068 fps or so, though I'm pushing against 60k PSI.

I'm also considering using 168 gr. Speer BTHP Match bullets. Looks like it could give me a very slight fps advantage over the SMK bullets.

    Any thoughts?

Why the 168's? There are far better options for the 300 winmag.

      Because they can go fast.

The MOA correction at 600 yards is substantially smaller for a 168 launched at 3000+ than for a 200 or 220 launched at 2800/2700.

I'm getting tempted to go even smaller and lighter to see how fast I can get those puppies to fly out.

      What would you recommend?

Comeups don't matter on known distance targets. If you want fast, shoot some 155 scenars. Better BC than the 168's and can be pushed faster. But your big concern on KD targets should be wind, not elevation correction. The heavier bullets with their correspondingly higher BCs will buck wind better at distance. Thats what you should go for when utilizing the extra boiler room capacity of the winmag.

Yep, gravity is constant so don't worry about it.

Wind varies so shoot the most wind resistant loads.

            Ahhhh....

That's an interesting point. I hadn't thought of that. Now I need to see if my scope can handle +15 MOA of correction...if so, I may have to go with 200/220.

Check the 190 SMK's. Most have good luck with them in a winmag. Try out a few of the other heavies as well like the 208 amax. You'll find something you like I'm sure.

LOL! Yeah, for killing paper, you can get more for less from the 260/243.

Sorry dude. A 300 win mag is all I got.

I wonder if I can get a brake attached before SCPRC...

                      Not in my shop.
I will not be installing any brakes on 300 win mags until after all the big precision rifle matches are over for the year.

                        Hehe...I don't blame you. I've heard stories.

Is the dust and dirt really that bad on a rifle without a brake?

Even without a brake, sitting next to the blast can be a little rattling.

I use 190 grain bullets over 73-75 grains of RL22. If I do my part, I get about .4 MOA.

                              Hmm...

How much does that compress your load? Have you encountered any issues with that?

If I don't mind compressing the powder a bit, I can get a 200 gr SMK up to around 2920...
