    223 vs 5.56

Confusing question from a new guy. one of my recently purchased Ar-15 clones has 223 on the barrel. I've read that you can shoot 223 in a 5.56 chamber and not recommended the other way around. My question is most factory ammo say 223/5.56 on the box. Which is it? al long as i am not shooting mil surplus is all "comercial ammo " in fact 223. Thanks in advance

look at what the actual stamp on the back end of the round. it should have .223 or 5.56, or the Nato stamp which looks like a circle with a + in it which would mean 5.56

.223 is ok in a 5.56 barrel. and yes DONT shoot 5.56 in .223 barrel.

I guess to be more clear in my question, in shopping for ammo online they routinely list it as 223/5.56.
          Thanks
