Now that I cough dust, prices way back then were a little more reasonable.....the cheapest Winc. Q3131A $1.59/20 on sale, Norinco 7.62x39 1200 rds for $89.95...it was considered the "next step" up from a 22lr for cost effectiveness. SKS was $90.00 bucks. Cheap Fed.AE 9mm was under 6.50/50.......sniff, I gotta stop now.....memories....

Pretty sad that my ammo has increased in value more than my retirement fund....

About 23yrs ago, a 20-rd box of PMC .223 would occasionally go on sale at Turners Reseda for 2.69/box.

You mean the panic right before Y2K? During the panic, you could get a 1000 round case of Wolf or Ulyanovsk 7.62x39 for $90-$100. It was $75 just before the panic.

Um. I remember paying 6.99 a box for Remington UMC 308 with a 150 gr bullet. This was a box of 20.

A box of 50ea .22 long rifle $ .50, I think that was with sales tax in 1966.

Here's a good article on the ammo/gun price boom that a fellow Calgunner wrote, that was just posted on Lew Rockwell's site.

Since Obama's victory in November, Smith and Wesson and Ruger, the only two publically traded US gun makers, have experienced major increases in their stock prices. Ammo manufacturers are running 24/7 attempting to keep up with demand. Military-pattern semi-automatic rifles, including AR-15's and AK-clones are expensive, stocked-out, or both. Are these price increases "gouging," as […]

I refuse to pay today's panic prices. I still have dozens of cases of ammo from the surplus days (80's-mid 90's) and before Clinton banned all Chinese arms imports. As others have said, Norinco 7.62x39 was $70-$80 for 1200rds, Chinese PS ball (steel core) in spam cans on strippers was about the same for 1440 rds, Norinco 223 (white and yellow box) was $130-$160 per 1600rd case. All manners of 308 NC FMJ from Paragon was $100-$130 shipped per 1000rd cases. Malaysian 223 was some of my favorite; approx. 9-10 cents per round in spam cans on AR strippers; hot as hell too! British 70's OFN Match 308 was $110 shipped per 1000rds (shoots into 1" through my FAL). Every once in a while there were crazy good deals from Paragon like Spanish 9mm 123 gr SMG ball at 1600rds for $90 shipped or Egyptian 8mm Mauser for 7 cents a round per case. Will we ever see these prices again? Probably not but I'll wait for better days nevertheless.

Fed Ord......used to go there at lunch time quite a bit; worked just down the street. I used to buy lots of reloading components from Cole's in Santa Monica and Bower's in LA. Everything was $10 or less back then. 1000 primers: $10. 1lb of powder: $10. 25lb bag of shot: $10. Those were the days, yeah? I feel sorry for the guys just getting started within the last 10 years.

PMC or Federal (red box american eagle) used to always be $3 per 20 once you go back at least 5 years.
$2.50 per 20 was a good deal and you could get them on-sale for $120 per 1000 rounds.

I also remember ammo being cheap enough for Gunshops to give it away
when you bought a gun. I miss those days.

Bowers was my favorite store on Hill St in LA a friend and I bought 12 lb kegs of Win 540 about every 3 months plus wads by the case & once fired Win AA's & $8 bags of shot .I took friends there to buy rifles and shotguns,my 1964 chev 3/4 ton p/u with a steel pullman camper shell left bowers tail heavy then we drove to orange county to buy cases of primers at Andrews(precursor to turners) & Grant Boys.
