Dillon 650 - primer seating aggravation

    Hey fellas,

I'm running into a problem with seating primers on my Dillon 650 and am looking to compare notes with other 650 users. Has anyone else had issues with the primer punch not correctly seating the primer? I can sometimes get it to work by holding the case and rotating it a few times while attempting to seat it again. It seems like the shellplate may not be aligning with the primer disk and when I do seat it, the primers are not seated deep enough. I'm reloading .223 military brass with CCI #41 primers and the military crimp has been removed via the Dillon Swager. This didn't happen when I first started using my Dillon.
Another clue is that the shellplate bolt is tight but I noticed that the shellplate is tilting during the primer seating. I can't remember if it did this previously. Is yours staying flat or does it tilt?

    Thanks for your input.

It looks like the actual little thing that pushes the primer into the primer pocket is loose. There is a nut with a spring on the bottom, adjust that so that it is snug. Then Tell us what happens.

Thanks USN Chief. I'll check that when I get home. Dillon just sent me a new one not too long ago as one piece so I figured that it was calibrated correctly.
Does your shellplate tilt during primer seating or does it stay flat?

I have not paid attention to it but I will when I get home.

I just did a caliber conversion and nothing should touch the shellplate that would make it tilt. Are you using the right primer punch? Did you switch between large and small primers recently? Sometimes for me the casing is not quite in the right place and I bounce the handle gently and spring loaded swing arm moves it into the right place. Without any casings operate the handle forward and see what the primer punch is doing.

I tighten the shellplate down so that it will rotate w/o much friction, but there is little to no lift in the shellplate.

No problems when setup like this.
