Hornady GMX 80 gr .243 Winchester

Anybody experienced with the above bullet? I have tested over 150 of them with different powder combinations and have yet to find any that shoot all that well. Five shoot groups run from 1.5 to 3 inches at 100 yds. This is from a Tikka T3 Lite that shoots the Hornady V-Max into less than 1". Damn things are expensive too.

I tried the 30cal GMX and gave up.
If you follow the 4 simple rules, I have not had a rifle/pistol that I did not get to shoot excellent groups using Barnes TTSX bullets. I had one but it would not shoot anything due to a bad scope. That is not the fault of the ammo.

I suggest you try the Barnes bullets using the 4 rules I have posted here many times and you will usually get great accuracy right away. I also agree that they cost more than some lead core bullets but not more than some lead core bullets I use.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Not the question asked but try the cutting edge bullets they are lathe turned. That said have you tried messing with your seating depth? I have some rifles that shoot lead free bullets lights out with a 15 thou jump and others that will only shoot them when less than 0.005 from the lands.

You bought and shot 150 of them trying to develop a load that shoots well? I'd have stopped after the first box (or before), that's expensive!

What powders did you try, how much did you use and how did you set the bullets. My Hornady load book calls for 2.64 OAL and lists 9 powders for that specific bullet. Have you contacted Hornady?

I do know that when I tried working up a load for 150 grain GMX in my .30-06, POI was about 2" higher than for factory ammo and I'm still not sure why that is.

My gmx reloads are not that great also but they are around 1.5 3 shot group in 30-06 remember non lead needs jump Seat to the last ring or more.
I believe my 139 gmx loads in my 7 mag shoot pretty good shot a coyote past 400 yards 2 years ago.I would have to look at my notes to see what it does.

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.

Divernhunter, Please tell me how to access the rules you mention above. And thank you.

I shot 25 more of the GMX's today....no Bueno. Or at least I think they should do better. Best one was 4 shots into 1.485". Average radius was .562". And I really doubt I can duplicated that. I'm running .040" short of max COAL. That's what Hornady suggested. And I'm not buying anymore of these to experiment with seating depth. So I guess its on to Barnes TTSX.
