ammo recommendation 45lc for bear ?

been having a issue with some bears and trying to get a Depredation tag due to the things killing a few chickens and ripping the door off my storage room 3 times now

looking for a ammo recommendation 45lc for bear, that would be coming out of a blackhawk with a 7 1/2 inch barrel leaning to the +p Buffalo Bore but looking if anyone here has a different idea just not sure about230 grain j.h.p. or 325 grain j.f.n.

The heaviest bullet you can control, the key word is control. Something with Barnes bullet is what I would be looking at. What's wrong with a big dose of bear spray, that not going to get it done?

99% of the time just yelling at them makes them run , its the 1% and running into one under the deck or in the brush or coming in the house, not trusting O.C. spray to protect mine or my kids life over a 45 cal pill have lived in bear country for a long time but never in a "no shooting" area like i am now(and why i am getting a Depredation tag) so the wildlife is a big issue around here the bears and cats have no fear

Never shot a bear, but buffalo bore is stout stuff and I've never once heard anything negative about it. A Blackhawk can handle anything factory loaded no worries.

Stupid question coming: head shot or center mass? That thing is probably going to charge if wounded.

                  Do you have a rifle?

Handgun as a method of intentional take on a bear is a bad idea. You're going to want something that is so obnoxiously unpleasant to shoot that it makes a handgun a distant second to a rifle. I'd much rather have a .45-70 or .30-06 (or .308, or 7mm, or ______rifle).

I would go with the heaviest bullet you can actually hit with. Most folks who shoot "bear loads" out of a revolver have a better chance lighting the bear on fire with muzzle flash than actually hitting it.

45LC wouldn't be my first choice to bring to a bear encounter. Do you have any other options available to you OP?

The .45 Colt with Ruger or Contender only loads is plenty hot enough to take a bear down.

not hunting it , its for a carry on the property and dont want to sling a rifle, besides my western rig looks good on me lol .. like i said they will scare off if i am on my deck and yell, just dont want to go down there and accidentally run into one ..

[delivered in my best Alfonso Bedoya impersonation]

The Department of Fish and Wildlife manages California's diverse fish, wildlife, and plant resources, and the habitats upon which they depend, for their ecological values and for their use and enjoyment by the public.

Section 4181.1 of the Fish and Game Code states that landowners may kill a bear encountered in the act of molesting or injuring livestock.
It also lists "fowl" as livestock.

There are differing codes for destruction of property, defense of self and family, etc etc etc. But they are there to allow defense against dangerous wildlife.

READ the link. PM "BIGBOARSTOPPER" and ask him also. If you apply for a Dep Permit. The huggers at DFW will crawl all up in you bunghole for weeks before they will issues one. And then it is for a very limited time period.

I live within incorporated city limits in LA County. And definitely a NO SHOOTING zone.

But capping a bear, lion, coyote, or even a rampaging rabid armadillo, exempts citizens from any ordinances.

Speer makes a nice big 300 grain JHP bullet. While I won't give you my load data, I did work up a fairly robust load with Unique that shoots well out of my 7.5" Ruger as well as the Henry. I think a 250g Hornady XTP pushed out at 1000 fps would probably work against our California black bear. Taking a 3-400 lb bear with a handgun isn't likely to be a case of "one shot, one kill" . Shoot til it's over. I'd use this opportunity to rationalize the purchase of a new Henry Big Boy rifle in .45 Colt, since you already have the Ruger :-)

Have you seen this dude in daylight yet? How big? Just curious.

Sounds like you've already spoken to your local warden. A friend of mine has a similar issue here locally. The fooker raided her fridge one night WHILE SHE WAS IN THE HOUSE. DFW did issue a short term permit, and the bear is still at large. We see tracks close in frequently..
