Why am I suddenly sticking cases with .308?

I have been reloading for a few years. I have never stuck a case with 7.62x54r, 30-06, 7.62x39 and .223 (OK, once with .223 but I was not paying attention!) and yes, I use Hornady One Shot! If I liberally spray it on the brass and inside the die, I never have issues. I just started reloading .308 about two weeks ago. I purchased about 500 supposedly once fired CBC cases from a CGunner. I'm using a brand new RCBS competition FL sizing die that I disassembled and cleaned before use. In the past week I have stuck 3 cases despite following my normal procedure . The last one completely destroyed my decapping assembly in the removal process (time to call RCBS for a replacement!). The brass is freshly tumbled and clean. Any ideas appreciated!

Interesting. Have you always used the competition die set or did you recently switch from the standard? I have never used the competition set but have never had a stuck case with the standard.

Just started reloading .308 and just bought the competition die set since I wanted the micrometer adjustable seating die.

You might want to call RCBS and see if its a problem with the competition sets. I have about 10 different dies of the standard with no problem. I use the RCBS case lube though with a pad. If they don't have any suggestions for you maybe try changing your case lube.

I had this problem with 2 RCBS 308 dies (a small base and a regular FL sizing die) and LC match brass (hard sizing even with Federal american Eagle brass...but not as hard as the LC brass...and I never stuck a Federal case)...I think I just figured out the problem a few nights ago....the neck expander balls appear to be too large in diameter. Anybody know what dimension they should be?

I use imperial sizing wax....and I tried one shot too. I just bought some Dillon lube (in the pump bottle) to try.

In the process of making some of the wild cats I shoot I have had some stuck cases . I have had to polish the inside of dies and the expander ball . I have some that I must use imperial sizing wax inside and out . One shot is good and I use it alot of the time , but it doesnt work for everything .
These 308 may have been fired in a chamber that was on the large side , once fired but out of what ?
You could try a few without the expander plug and see what if it is easy to do that would tell something

I never stuck a case until the first and only time I used OneShot. I don't know what the stuff is but it's not a lubricant. It's like Insta-Seize. I have better luck using nose grease than OneShot. It's seriously the most craptastic excuse for case lube i've ever tried.

Get a tub of Imperial or Unique sizing wax. All you need is the lightest film on your finger, I run my finger lightly across the tub about every 5 or six cases then swipe the case before I size it. One tub will last a lifetime.

I went ahead and tried to resize some without the decap/expander assembly (since mine's busted ) and they are still extremely tight. I spoke with the seller from whom I purchased the brass and he said that he purchased it from a gun club and was assured that it was once fired, but through what? Obviously, this brass went through a chamber that was oversized. I also noted that some of the brass is as much as 2.035" after resizing. Seems like a lot of stretch for once fired cases!

I measured the diameter of the expander ball and it's .306" on my comp die.

As to the perceived ineffectiveness of OneShot, I disagree. I use it in my progressive press all the time without issue. You just have to know how to use it correctly.

I will try the sizing wax with these problem cases however.

clean the die too. the hornady one shot lube builds up in the die. i know. also a better way to use it is to put the cases in a ziplock baggie then spray in the lube and shake them up. that way they will stay lubed in the baggie.

Give the lady at RCBS a call about stuck cases. I stuck a few so I called and the first question she asked was "are you using One Shot Lube?" She told me about 90% of the calls she was getting about stuck cases were from people using One Shot. I asked her for her recommendation and of course she recommended RCBS lube. I switch and I haven't stuck a case since.

try some lee lube or vasaline

also try the lee rgb dies at $15 they are a steal and they work for me

its worth it just to have it handy for when you stick another

I don't think one-shot is up to the task of re-sizing 308 brass.
It might be fine with 223, but you need to look at dillon lube or imperial for serious sizing.

I went to the Ventura show this AM to look for Imperial wax but found nothing . Luckily, CGunner CSACANNONEER offered to give me one of his tins. He is theee man! Short story is that it worked. Some of the brass required incredible pressure on my Rock Chucker to resize them but none of them stuck. Thanks to everyone for the feedback!

That tin should last you for a long time. I probably size 500-800 rounds of 50BMG per tin. I bet that would equate to 2000-3000 of that dinky .308 brass you're sizing.
