If Californians don't change their buying habits when buying online, the online retailers will do nothing more than possibly tag on a "transfer fee surcharge". However, if history is any indicator, Californians will start hoarding ammo and the usual culprits (ie, the like of Cheaper Than Dirt) will raise there prices in a gouge response
to supply and demand (then other online retailers will jump on the "what the market will bear" bandwagon ... in a perfect world, it doesn't cost them any more to ship to a permitted ammo vendor in CA (similar to FFL but for ammo only), it will then be up to the permitted ammo vendor in CA to come up with a "transfer" fee for their time in handing the ammo to you + overhead (background check, storage, etc), expect the online ammo vendors to want a piece of that pie, which is why you're likely to see a "if it ships to CA surcharge" when make the purchase online

Isn't it that we will be limited to purchase 500 bullets per month?
If so then the shipping cost will off-set any advantage over just buying retail in California...

I can't understand all the debating and bickering over what may or not happen, what retailers may or not do, etc.
The one thing you can absolutely be positively sure about is that it won't be as good as it is right now.

        Don't wait, stock up now.

Don't forget about minimum wage going up... presumably the person at the counter is going to be getting paid 15 bucks an hour to pick their nose and do your "instant" background check while they ring you up. My guess is it'll take 15 minutes+ or so... that also has to translate into the cost of your ammo. Either way... prices are going to suck. Just start making your own.

*edit* just missed reading the second pages of posts on this topic. This has already been mentioned. Sorry to be redundant!

So some people are worried about buying ammo out of state and driving it back to CA. Wow! How many illegal aliens come across the border and stay without consequence. Heck there are sanctuary cities. We need a patriotic sanctuary ammo city too. I'm not worried about enforcement at the border.

Personally I'm going to take a drive to buy my ammo. To Texas. Where I will buy a house and live. F this state.

I want to give some tips on how to drive back to California from what i learn about driving fireworks back from Nevada. As a disclaimer this is just what I read on the pyrotechnics forums and not what I would ever do personally. The weeks leading up to 4th of July they usually position undercover vehicles outside fireworks stores in Pahrump NV taking pictures of all California tagged vehicles. When you drive back across the border they will pull you over for extra scrutiny of your vehicle. So if you are to do this rent a car for a day once you cross state line, go to the gun show and buy whatever it is you want, then transfer it back to your vehicle before driving back home.

It is probably not worth it to do all this just for ammo so use the advice if you deem it applicable.

Ammo prices are irrelevant, if the DOJ doesn't publish the ammo vendor regulations and begin registering and licensing same, there will be no one to sell you ammo, or receive your Internet order.

This is good point. No direct internet order and DOJ makes it hard to get ammo vendor license, little ammo for sale, and the skyhigh price

Their failure to provide licensing mechanism does not lessen your obligation to comply with the law. How you comply is irrelevant. That you do is all that matters. Now, if you can't comply, then you do comply. By not selling ammo. And there's nothing unconstitutional about that (not the constitution is even valid here, but...) because all you have to do is comply with a law to sell. Whether you can comply or not isn't their concern. You will comply.

Now, back to the salt mines, peasant.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.
