Looking for less penetration

I have a maximum of 100y to shoot from and I'm looking for bullets that dump energy on impact. My steel is starting to divot and I want to give it a break. I've been loading with the minimum charge and that has helped considerably but now I'm looking for new bullet types.

I got a batch of 50g soft points for a screaming good deal and that got me thinking... They're lighter which means more velocity, but would having a soft point do what I want it to?

There happens to be a good deal on 62g soft points which is the grain of bullet I really want. Are these good at dumping energy quickly or should I go with the more expensive hollow points which are available as well?

I'm assuming you're talking about a .223 or 5.56 round. Frangible bullets do exactly what you want them to do. I use Hornady VMAX projectiles for varmints because they fragment on impact and reduce the likelihood of a dangerous ricochet. Nosler makes Varmageddon rounds that do the same thing.

They're more spendy than solids and hollow points, and it's probably cheaper to replace the steel if you do a lot of shooting, but now you have some options.

I don't want to buy frang because of the cost, that's why I'm asking about other options specifically. Frangible is really great but the cost is just too steep for plinking ammo.

What's the name of this round? I am intrigued. Also, is that even accurate out to 100y?

OP - You still haven't said what round, the bullets you had used and want to use.

I am guessing 223, but I don't shoot that round or load it (of course).

Indeed, .224 diameter boooolits are what I use. FMJ are what I have used, soft point and hollow point are what I'm considering... That was contained in the original post that calguns edited for some reason.

For 100yd steel plinking. Look into hardcast boolits.

My first recommendation was going to be the 55gr V-Max / Z-Max bullets from Hornady, but sounds like you already shot that down.

You should at least try a small box... they are pretty awesome.

Not sure what else... but that is what I use for my frangible.

There is always the Hornady #2266 Spire Point / Soft Point bullet. I hear good things about them too, but I have never loaded them up myself.
