    BE careful and PAY attention!!

YEsterday I had to leave for work early and my daughter was supposed to go with me. When I woke her up she sad she was too tired. Her not going would allow me a quick trip to the range on the way home so I quickly loaded up some new bullets for my big bore revolver that I had received the night before. When I got to the range I loaded up and the first round failed to fire. The gun was locked up tight. So I fiddled with it for a while until I figured out it wasn't going to fire and took it home. When I got the bullet out I noticed that there was very little powder burn in the casing so I took apart the other 19 rounds I had loaded. Looks like I put too little powder in the hopper and the last SIX rounds had no powder. It was a stark reminder to me to pay attention, it could have just as easily have been a double charge and blown up on me. Let me dumb mistake serve as a warning to watch what you are doing and don't load when you are tired.

    hill billy,

Thanks for the reminder. I was just going to head out to the garage to put a few rounds together since I have a free hour.

I think I mentioned it before somewhere, but it doesn't matter how long you've been reloading (closing in on forty years for myself). All it takes is one lapse in concentration, and things can get really exciting. Don't ask me how I know.

How did you get the stuck bullet out? Mallet and wooden dowel trick? You forced it back into the case, I presume?

I use a single stage loader for my rifle rounds. When I start pouring powder in the cartridge cases, I never leave the loading area until I am done reloading completely. Never have. I don't need distraction to screw up for my own safety.

I use a single stage press and I never have this problem or the potential to have this problem because I reload each cartridge one by one. It's pretty obvious if a case has no powder when it's sitting in a reloading tray with the case mouth up.

Yeah, loading is not something i like to rush. A Dillon with a properly adjusted powder check will stop this from happening though.

That's why I prefer large volume powders like Win 296 instead of Blue Dot or Unique: you cannot throw a double charge and put a bullet on top of it. It just isn't enough space inside the case for a twice the normal amount of powder.

It happens. The best way to get out a squib round is with a wooden dowel. then slowly tap the squib out.
