Loading 7.62x54R with 174gr HPBT...

I just loaded up 100 rounds to test this week. I used a Sierra 174gr HPBT bullet for the projectile, and CFE-223 for the powder. Brass is all once fired PPU brass. Full length resized using RCBS dies. I don't care for the RCBS dies. I always tend to get shoulder dents, I have a set of Redding dies on there way. Never had a problem with Redding dies denting up shoulder from the lube.





Here is the load data I used for these rounds. I loaded with CFE-223 powder.



I tested a handful of rounds last time with a different stick (H4831-SC) powder and they shot way high. They were flat shooters, but wanted to use up some CFE-223 powder. I loaded these with 44.7gr of CFE-223 powder. My estimated velocity is 2700 to 2800 FPS with a 29" barrel. I will take my chrono to check them.

I will need to put a scope on my Mosin to fix this problem of these rounds shooting high. Iron sights in the rear are as low as they will go. Don't want to have a tall front sight. I heard the Mosin were sighted in at 300 yards with a 200gr bullet. Is that correct for the original setup? I have a Russian 91-30. I know the lighter bullet and better BC on this bullet vs original setup make it shoot higher. Any one else have this problem?

Anyone else out there have a good 174gr bullet powder combo?

They were shooting about a foot high at 100 and 300 yards. I had to aim down in the dirt in front of the target to hit the steel plate at 100 and 300 yards.

As you can see the BC at .499 is really good. Here is my bullet drop calculations for this bullet.

Calculation with .499 BC as G7. I think this bullet should be closer to G7 BC calculation.

It's a bolt action...take the bolt out, sight down the bore and compare to the sights, might reveal something.

I sighted in my psl with ball ammo and when shifting to hunting rounds it went straight up 2 inch at 100. How did she shoot with ball?

If I shoot factory PPU ball or SP 150 or 180gr they are spot on at 100 yards.

I talked to Sierra bullets tech support. They said they are not surprised. The BC of the 174gr HPBT has way better BC then the SP ammo from the factory. I will just have to use Kentucky windage to adjust for it right now.

The thing is that the BC isn't going to have a 12 inch impact at 100 yds... I would be interested to know what actual muzzle velocity is, because it sounds to me like it's shooting much hotter, which would make it shoot higher... I'll run your loads through quick load later, and see what it has to say...
