Wow, 17 cents/rd plus shipping? I remember buying brass cased Bulgarian Heavy ball for 11 cents/rd shipped, and that wasn't very long ago.

Beware of steel core/steel jacketed ammo if that's a problem at your specific range.Randall Rausch

I've been careful with mine, I haven't shot any surplus. I shoot rocks in the desert and maybe it's me being dumb but I don't like steel for that. I also don't like the corrosive primers that are in some of the surplus.... So yeah I pay way too much for my ammo. On the bright side I don't tend to shoot much of it and I'm saving the brass to reload at some point.Comment

I just ordered a tin of 80's production Russian that says it's lead core. I'm hoping when it arrives today that my magnet doesn't stick to it like the last tin I got of 440 that said it was lead core... My range doesn't allow it..though I still shoot it there.
This is what I just ordered from surplusammo.com since my normal place (aimsurplus) is out of lead-core at the moment.Fleeing the PRK on 3/8/09!!Comment

It's probably steel jacket and lead core.
That's why it's magnetic, even though it's not armor piercing.Randall Rausch

Yeah, I wish they'd say if the jacket was steel..though I've never seen that before. I've heard of bi-metal cases that were copper washed. This tin i just bought just says lead core "fmj" which to me suggests it shouldn't be steel since they point out that the case is steel. Oh well..moving to montana soon and it is ok where I'll be shooting!

Nothing to fear from surplus. I have been shooting corrosive surplus 7.62x54 in Mosins and SVT-40s..Never had a problem just follow SOP for cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo..I've been careful with mine, I haven't shot any surplus. I shoot rocks in the desert and maybe it's me being dumb but I don't like steel for that. I also don't like the corrosive primers that are in some of the surplus.... Steel bullets are usually copper washed.Yeah, I wish they'd say if the jacket was steel..though I've never seen that before. I've heard of bi-metal cases that were copper washed. A magnet will tell you if the jacket is steel.
Steel cases are usually lacquered.Randall Rausch
