    3n37 for .45 long colt.

Anyone ever use 3n37 in their SAA clone?
Found a little data, but not many people on gun boards mention it. One article in Guns and Ammo 2011 and a couple others. Speer 14, says 11.5 grains max, but with a 250gr. SWC.
I have a bunch of the powder, but 250gr RNFP bullets. If I use the start load of 10.5gr. Anyone see a problem.
Just want a decent working load and I've got 4lbs of 3n37.

    Thanks

No, haven't used it. Very happy with Trail Boss for 45L.C. If I can't find TB, I use Bullseye, or Win 231.

      2nd this.
I've been getting FANtastic results with W231 and
Missouri Bullet Company 250gr RNFP's out of my Marlin lever 45lc.

10.5 would be a safe starting load for your 250 RNFP bullet, work up in .2 grain increments until you get the performance that you want safely.

Some times people just can't answer the question.

Sorry I took a while to get back.
I have 231 also, infact loaded 25 of each but haven't got the gun yet. Still in jail. The 3n37 I picked up durring the panick. was not my first choice, but things were ugly for a while.
            will try both and see.
            Thanks for the replies

It would not be my first choice for the caliber.
That's not to say it won't work.
None of my reloading manuals list that power for the 45LC.
Are you trying to do a one power for many caliber reloading's?

Trust but verify. Find some published data. It may save you from needing to find a hand surgeon.

It is listed in Speer volume 14, but for a 250gr swc. Not a 250gr rnfp. Three published mag. articles I found also list it. they are a few years old though. 2011 ish.
The max is 11.5 gr and start is 10.5 gr. I was mostly courious why it was in a few articles and faded away. VV came out with a better powder?
It was not my first choice either. For anything really, except 9mm. But I found it when I was having trouble getting any pistol powder. And it will work for other calibers I load.
Thought I would try it since I have it. I have no intention of hotrodding this or any gun. Thought I would throw it out there and see if any red flags showed up.

                    Thanks for the replies everyone.
The Dec 4 2011 issue of Guns and Ammo. Reloading the 45 Colt listed 11.5 gr and the article said all loads mentioned were under 14,000
Handloader issue 246 lists 11.0 gr but for a 270 gr Keith bullet.
There is one more article I found, but have it on another computer.

Anyway I just thought I would ask to see if someone had used that powder, or if there was a reason not to.
Just have a bunch of 3n37 and thought I would give it a try.

                    thanks again

The bullet style won't be a big deal.

I use primarily Blue Dot for my SAAMI pressure 45 Colts. Partly because the slow powder (not disimilar to yours given the charge weight) gives me a bit more velocity in my carbines.

2400 works well and is really clean, I got my recipe from Lee 2nd. Hard to find.

231/HP-38 is good, but dirty. Especially on the case.
