    Wolf primers

I'm seeing more and more Wolf primers being used for .223 reloading and wondered how the fit and function is. In these time of short to no supply are they an ok substitute for the usual quality primers out there?

Good point! I found some so I have part of the reloading issue solved for now. All I have to do is address the other components as I find them.

        Another question about Wolf primers.
Wideners lists both small rifle and small magnum Wolf rifle primers. It shows this for the magnums:
WFSRM WOLF SMALL RIFLE MAGNUM PRIMERS (For use in 5.56 loads)$21.00/1000

Wolf Small Rifle Magnum primers have the same power as regular Wolf Small Rifle primers, but the cup is a little thicker and less sensitive.
Does anyone know anything about this? How does that make them "magnum" primers?

I only have used the Wolf large rfile primers and it has very promising performance. Once I used up all my Federal primers, I will buy Wolf primers.

Everything I've ever read has had positive input on Wolf primers. Even sources which are overwhelmingly negative about Wolf ammo.

I have a bunch of Wolf primers lying around at present, but I haven't gotten around to reloading with them yet.

What if anything do you have to base the premise on that they aren't as high a 'quality'.

I only have used Wolf large pistol primers so far and after 600, they all went "BANG"...

It makes them able to handle higher pressures before they show pressure signs.

Randall is this why WSR primers get so flat in my AR even in lite loads?

The Wolf SR primers are excellent primers. I only use them for my Service Rifle loads for HighPower competition

If you are getting flat primers with light loads, there's a real good chance your ammo/gun has excessive headspace.

Read PO Ackley's books for the full explanation, but basically, the primer backs out at initial pressure spike and expands slightly into the excessive headspace area, then the case re-seats itself back against the boltface, leaving a squared off primer.

If headspace is properly controlled, the primer does not slide out.
In that case, the squared-off primer cup would be a more proper indication of high pressure.

OK thanks, (I do appreciate the reply) but I only see it with Win primers, I have used Fed's loaded at the same time, using win cases, same trim length and OAL, but the Win primers seem flatter

I will keep an eye on things, I only have 1k more win primers to go then I am going to use something else.

also was it you that said you only use Magnum primers? and if so why?

                            No.

I run winchester small rifle primers almost exclusively.
The exception is that I scored 10K Herters small rifle primers a few months back for $100.
These are old primers, probably 30-40 years, but they work just fine.
I'm using those now until they are gone.
Then I will get more winchesters.

I can understand that. I also thought that magnum primers were a bit hotter than standard primers. I.e. a CCI 450 is hotter than a CCI 400, and a Remington 9 1/2M hotter than a 9 1/2. I have been using CCI450's with Winchester 748, as indicated by my Speer reloading manual. Since I can't get 450's right now, I was hoping the Wolf magnum small rifle would be a replacement, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Is that correct??
