    Winchester Ranger ammo dissected

I just bought a box of (RA45SXT) Winchester Ranger Law enforcement 230 GR SXT 45 Auto Ammo from a calguns member and I pulled the bullet and measured everything and this is the result.
    Powder 7.3 grains
    bullet 230 grains
    case .890"
    bullet .639"
    OAL 1.250"

Now I have been reloading and I have asked about powder loads and I have been told that 5.5 grains is max load with winchester 231 powder, I was afraid to shoot this bullet in my 1911 but just seeing this load that is used in this talon or Ranger ammo makes me wonder why I was worried about my handloads only being 5.5 grains with a copper jacket lead bullet.

Maybe they use different powder? I don't reload, so I can't really tell you anything meaningful there, but I have shot various kinds of Winchester Ranger in .380, 9mm, .40, .223, and 12GA in various guns and had no issues with it. It was very accurate, too, and fed well.

The powder used by Winchester in their factory loadings is not a canister powder. They use powders specially formulated to their specs for the type of ammo it's being used for. They don't even use the same powder for the same loads all the time. Comparing that 7.3gr of mystery powder to WW321 (or any other WW powder for that matter) is comparing apples and oranges.

So what you are saying is that 7.3 grains isn't really 7.3 grains compaired to the 5.5 grains, or are you saying that the gunpowder I am loading with is different in power then the gunpowder that the ranger load is loaded with? I don't get it isn't gunpowder the same or doesn't the 7.3 grains of magic winchester the same as the 321 winchester powder at 5.5 grains? I think this is a conspiracy to make us buy different types of brands even though it just gunpowder, maybe not the same gunpowder that the chinese discovered but still gunpowder.

I don't even know what to say.

You should not be reloading ammunition.

There are a lot of new reloaders out there right now.

Please be careful and read up on the subject in any major reloading manual.

I havent even started reloading but I've read my Lee book and from common sense different powders are just that, different. Some burn slower and some burn faster. Who knows what kind of powder that is. Just stick to the load data and work your way up like everyone suggests.

Ok thats it I'm pulling the bullets I have loaded up to 5.5 grains even though the Hornady loading reference states that the 5.7 grain are max load and I am reloading the bullets at 5.0 grains, you guys scare me with the Kaboom of my pistol.
