I got Hornady 178 BTHP Matches from Cabelas for $27.19 per 100 on 9/7/16 without including gift card or Activejunky discounts. Figure no tax, cheap shipping and it's an awesome deal.

Their shipping is stupid expensive, and pretty much eats up most of the savings.
Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

Try evergladesammo.com for bullets. Their prices are shipped prices.
If you use Win 748 powder it will work well in 308 and 223.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Yeah every time I've found a deal from them, I checked the shipping cost and it sucked. I won't buy from them.

$12 flat rate even if you buy 3k. If you're plinking, you probably need to buy more than a box of 100, but for bolt action shooting 50 rounds a month still is 600 rounds a year.

just saw free Hazmat at Notchez Shooter.

looking: Winchester Large Rifle Primer and Hodgdon Extreme Varget Rifle Powder

I am pretty sure that that powder will work. How about the primer? I was looking for cci 200, but it is out of stock. Thanks

I use this combo on 308 and 06,and the powder is great for heavier 223 bullets.Recobs Target Shop has what you want.!

Hence this post. A few key factors:safety , accurate enough for ~200 yards for plink only and relatively low price (.50c/round)

So here is what I am trying to buy:

Since you are loading 30-cal, your biggest expense are the cost of bullets and powder.

Buying in bulk will allow you to save since you are locked into a price point until your component batch is used up.

Stock up on 8lb powder jugs, 5k sleeve of primers, and at least 3k of match grade bullets. Yeah match grade bullets for plinking may be $$ but you are paying for consistency. 155 grain Nosler CC is pretty good on price and performance.

For 308, I usually use 155, 168 or 178 Match Kings as a projectile. Powder: IMR 4064, Varget, 8208XBR and VV N140 all work well for me. I run Lake City brass in the bolt gun and Federal in the AR (simply because I have so much of it, not out of any kind of advantage or loyalty.)

If you're just starting, fine, smaller lots will let you experiment and find a combination that works for you, but larger lots save more money, time, and hassle (don't have to keep running to the gun shop or waiting for UPS to show up.)

Once you get a load you like, definitely go with 8lb jugs of powder (single pound won't get you too far.) Keep enough other components in stock that a month or so of shortage (meaning not being able to buy the stuff) won't keep you from the range.

                            Luck;

It takes a lot of effort to reload .308, not to mention, over 40 grains of powder per round.

If you're going to go through the process of reloading .308, my suggestion is not to do it for "plinking".

Accuracy and tight groups will make reloading .308 well worth it.
