    w231 in 9 and 40?

i was gifted some w231 from a calgunner. question is what load do you like?
9mm, 115 or 124 plated. I usually run 4 gr of tite group. Nice load mild recoil.
    .40, 165 fmj 5.3 gr tg.
    .40 180 fmj, 5.3 gr tg.

So? Anyone have some pet loads?

    Thanks.
    Dk.

I like 5.0gr W231 with 115gr FMJ 9mm, been loading these for over 25 years now.

I just loaded and shoot 9mm plated 124 with 4.6 of w231 with an OAL of 1.125. It ran great in my CZ75. This is near if not over the max depending what book your looking at. It shot like a full power factory load.

For 40 I ran a 180 coated under 4.4 with an OAL of 1.14. It shoot will out of my M&p40. Soft but not light. I may step this up to 4.6 next time.

For 45 I ran 230 coated over 4.7 with a OAL of 1.25 if I recall correctly. This shot well out of my springer full size. I have some loaded at 5 grains but did not try them yet.

I have run 231 and Power Pistol. PP seams to have more potential for higher velocity but you get more snap and flash (which can be a lot of fun.). 231 seems like a good well round powder 9mm to 45 for me and I am sure it could to more.

It also meter ok in my Lee Auto drum.

            Similar to what I use.

            For 9mm 124 plated I like 4.7 gr 231 at 1.150".

Winning competitors have successfully use W231 in 9mm for decades. However, I don't think they used plated bullets. Not when the events required any sort of accuracy.

Believe I used 3-3.2 with 147gr moly coated. Heavy bullets with fast powder works well with light recoil.

Yes agreed. Love the 180 in 40. Guess I need to get some 147s.

I have been using HP-38 (same as W-231) in 40S&W for some time now. Out of an M&P40fs, I use 5.0 gns for a 180 gn JHP (not plated - full jacket) and get 934 fps. I get about the same velocity for a 180 gn RNFP plated.

I used 5.2 gn of HP-38 to push 165 gn Zero JHPs to 990 fps (also out of the M&P) but found my pistol grouped better at 4.6 gns for 880 fps.

Thanks. I figured some folks here would have some good pet loads. Yes I have the lee and hodgen manuals.
However it takes alot of time, working loads.
                      I really appreciate the responses.
                      Thanks again caligunners.

4.4gr with 115fmj turned gives me the smallest group with my S&W929 revolver.
