    Exactly.

I know I've done it and if you haven't you will some day .

The firearms that will be shooting this load will be a XD-9 during load development and at some point I'll drop the charge down a bit and work back up for a S&W shield .

You're talking about 9mm not precision rifle so youre unlikely to get the data you demand. Besides you have a very specific bullet, two possible powders, unnamed mixed headstamp brass and multiple guns with different chambers. You dont deserve a more specific answer.

Good question. If your not using it for self defense or hunting/pest control then why does it matter if you get expansion?. Thats off topic though so try to stay focused.

      Bigdawg

I've always loaded for accuracy when loading rifle rounds . Therefore I've rarely needed to push my loads hard . I'll work up a load doing a traditional load development 5rds in .3 , .4 , .5gr increments from minimum to max charge . Depending on the caliber generally 1% of max charges . Meaning 223 is .3gr , 308 .4gr , 30-06 .5gr etc . I have on more then one occasion never even fired the upper charges because I found an accurate load in the lower charge range .

Although the charge increments are different when loading for handgun . I generally do the same thing . When I find an accurate load I stop with the feeling I need not go higher . I have and do load some premium HP bullets but those are designed to expand at lower velocities generally so my traditional load development works just fine for those . How ever I'm in a new place and need a specific velocity with a specific bullet . That velocity is on the hotter side and that has put me outside my comfort zone and is why I've asked the question .

So with that long prelude , I don't know when it comes to handgun cartridges if I'll see pressure signs before kaboom . I rarely load hot in either rifle or handgun loads and is another reason I'm asking these questions .

I do know I measure , weigh and test many aspects of my rifle loads from case volume to velocity and keep all that data to reference . I've observed some interesting things just by changing brass and that's with very large cases and much slower powders in comparison to the 9mm . With such a small case and fast powders the wiggle room you have with 9mm is much less then lets say 223 . You can see that in the charges them selves . min to max in 223 can be around 4gr while min to max in 9mm can be only .4gr

All that gives me pause when pushing the 9mm hard . I've heard that HS-6 is a good powder for this application do to it's forgiveness . Unlike Titegroup that tends to get squirrely at higher pressures . So in that respect I feel I'm on the right track but wanted to check with others that have already been pushing 9mm hard .

Calguns77 , my reasoning for wanting expansion is irrelevant and is why I'm trying to move away from it .

I stated that I'll be testing one gun then may move to another and the multiple head stamps is the whole point of the thread FOCUSS haha

I know I'm not talking precision rifle . The problem is that's what I loaded for years before moving to handgun . I now want all the data I can get . Some like to wing it , I like to be as informed as possible . It's not who's way is better , just what I feel better or more comfortable with .

Balmo's numbers are encouraging because he is clearly pushing that 124gr bullet hard .

When I was doing my ladder test, I got to 1450fps without much flattening of the primer really. I felt that after 1380fps, the law of diminishing return is kicking in as far as working the comp on my open gun.

Titegroup is to fast of a powder trying to make major. Autocomp, 3N38, Shilloute, HS6, CFE Pistol are some of the powders you usually see used trying to make major.

Folks, fvck gelatin blocks, **** theory, **** if a .45 ACP projectile leaves New York at 950 FPS and eats a Taco in Bakersfield.

Go load your ****, get you shoot on, chrono your missiles and work out velocity, mass, blah blah blah.

Exactly. Learn to read. It's impossible to even give you the specific data you want because you don't list the mixed brass you have.

If expansion is irrelevant then don't list it in your origonal post. Learn to be concise if you're autistic about pecise responses.

Calguns , expansion is not important as far as why I want it . I mentioned it so I would not get every one asking why I HAD to get 1200fps OMG you're just arguing to argue or you really don't know what you're talking about and if that's the case please go away .

Not sure how the specific head stamps matter to you seeing how mixing brass is no big deal IYO , but I did do some case volume test last night so I actually have the head stamp of every case in the lot

The headstamps aren't improtant to me they're important to you since you demand spreadsheets with data. Since you're worried about the varying thickness of brass affecting pressure at max loads in certian brass, how would any data help you if it didnt include your specific brands?

By the way all you asked for was opinions in your original post. If your going to demand extremely specific info and get mad when you don't get it, maybe consider articulating your request properly. Don't ask for peoples opinions if you're just going to dismiss them. You're just wasting their time.

... is a handful of guys saying "I've done it for 30 years and it's fine"

... The smart ones (imo) buy new Starline brass, shoot it at major 2-3 times, then retire it to lower pressure loads and buy new brass.
Gee I feel like an old timer because I was reloading 9mm in 1982.

Great advice. Also if you sweep up once fired brass I will separate that too.

If you want top accuracy, you will need brass with all the same head-stamp

If you just want to practice then mixed brass is good enough - especially if you are at a range where picking up your brass isn't easy. You can also leave your junk at the range and take the new brass other people have left.
