One of the reasons I reload is to keep the mrs. out of the garage.

Hand priming with a face shield. I'd bet money you're the most cautious reloader ever. Impressive.

I generally wear my hearing protection when I reload
Had a primer go off once, just one primer but even that was LOUD.

Yes , it gets foggy sometimes . Most of time I have on headphones
too . Not so much to protect hearing as to hear T V .

Agreed, safety glasses at a minimum

Also even with the Unitek closed system primer upgrade, the leftover
primer residue gets in the air

Having a respiratory sensitivity, I wear a dust mask when depriming

I've reloaded a lot over the course of 40 years, and never had anything like this happen. I've always used RCBS and Hornady presses; is this somehow made more likely due to some design element in the Dillon primer feed system? I ask because a lot of people seem to report having it happen and they're all using Dillon presses.

Honest question, no brand war desired.

That must have been a loud bang. You're lucky your neighbors didnt call the police. Not sure I would want to explain this to them. Not sure where you live but I don't think it will go well with my local police/fire marshal.

                    Malthusian -
I put a towel on like a bib . Unreal how much stuff come out when decapping .
I expect it when cleaning primer pockets and flash holes . I even get it [ lots
less ] when hand priming .
                    - -
cvigue - no this is not limited to Dillon or RCBS .I am using a Lee loadmaster
and I had so many problems , I switched to hand depriming and priming .
While it was faster to deprime on press , unless I was doing a whole bunch - it was just as fast doing by hand [ decapping ]
After decapping / cleaning primer pockets and flash holes and putting in either the tumbler , vibrator , or sonic .
Most people have had problems with primers - at least the ones I talked to before coming to this site .
In my case , it could have been me , the cheap primers I was buying or the press -
                    Probably a combination of all 3 .
Now I do by hand and only use CCI primers .

FYI - The cops show up - you say -
I turned off car , then remembered I had to buy milk . I turned it back on and boom . Really scared me .

FWIW - it likely happened bc you were pushing up on the primer too hard/too fast. Primers need percussion to go off. You can slowly crush them all day long. But strike them hard and bang. Go slower on the upstroke

Exactly. I lock the door, turn off the cell phone, put on some classical music, put on safety glasses and focus on reloading.

when that happens, do all the primers go off at once, or is it "bang bang bang bang bang..."?
