    300 Blackout Loads

Getting serious now with reloading 300 Blackout.

Rifle used: Ruger American Rifle Ranch, 300 Blackout, 16"barrel, 1/7 twist.

Load: 125 grain Speer TNT, 17.6 grains H110.

    Distance: 100 yards.

    Target dots are 1.25".

Looking for others to post their results.

I load the 125 Speer as well over H110 and its been a really great load for me. I have a fixed 3x on the 300 so "group size" is more a function of my shooting that round accuracy, but I normally get pretty small -MOA or tighter- groups out of my 16", 1-8 SS barrel AR platform. Ringing 12" steel at 300yards is no real issue and at one point I used it as my backup rifle for 3-gun. When I have a few moments I will post my load data

What bullets re you using? The lightest bullets I use are 115gr VMAX and they are pretty dang accurate.

So I have been reading that H110 works pretty good for 300 blk and 308, but not so well with 223 556. is this accurate ?

if so are there any powders you guys can recommend that are good for most rifle calibers? I have a number or calibers that I would like to reload mainly 300 blk, 762x39, 223, 556, and 308 and was hoping I could use one powder for all of them.

              thanks in advance

Keeping to a few powders is a good goal, but you're over-doing it with the range of calibers you want to use. H4198 is good for 762x39 and OK for 223 Rem/556 NATO (not great) but unsuited for large capacity case calibers like 308 Winchester.

Buy at least one, preferably two, reloading manuals and read them (for REAL) before you build a shopping list. The load data you see will drive your powder selections for the various calibers.

thanks, I ordered the lyman reloading handbook and should be getting it early next week.

I figured the 308 would need different powder. Im going to start reloading 300 blk first and work my way from there. in all honesty the 308 will probably be the last caliber I learn to load

                    I currently use IMR 4064 for 223/556, 308, and 30-06. I use 1680 for 300 blackout.

Others might feel differently, but for me, I would start loading the 308 before the 300 blackout. I'm not sure if it was because of the magazines or the projectiles I use, but I had a few challenges to figure out with the 300 blackout and none with 308.

I loaded up a batch of 175 SMK's and dropped under 1 MOA, but those are too damned spendy to plink with at short range.

My next step is to embrace the plink and use the 90 gr XTP's and Speer 100 gr Plinkers I bought for my M1 Carbine and see if I can get them to feed (the don't in my M1). It's no big deal but I think a slower twist would be better for supersonics.
Unless your going to use a tipped bullet like a Blitzking or similar I think 1.5 is very good for a hunting bullet, although of course some load development might help shrink the group. I use the Speer 125gr TNT and if I do my part I get just under MOA @100. the 1-8 twist should work just fine for the bullets you are wanting to use.

I just loaded up some 300 BLK loads.

                        Nosler Varmageddon 110g
                        19-21g Lil'gun (20.5 and 21 mildly compressed, but only 40,000PSI)

                        Nosler 180g Ballistic Tip
12-15g Lil' gun. 15g charge is a little hot, but quick load has it at 55,000 PSI which is fine by me considering 223 REM and 5.56 is Between 55-62K PSI.

Now if I can actually get to the range to try them out. They will be shot out of a 16" Carbine gas system. I won't even bother with subs with this build, but have a different upper (8" with pistol gas) for eventual subsonic duty.

I got away with a 9 twist Savage shooting .66 MOA with 35 gr NTX (223 Rem) using 40 gr lead load data (per Nosler) so I was hoping I could get similar anomalous results with this DD barrel. Doing OCW at 200 yards for a 150 yard caliber doesn't seem reasonable, so 100 yards it was, but other than that it's wrung out. I'll keep an eye on what goes on sale in light 308 bullets, but I'm not about to waste $$ on 147 gr pulls just to poke holes.

Whose barrel do you have? Edit to add: this chamber is REALLY tight, like my Weatherby Vanguard 270 WSM tight - I get FLAT primers but nothing else with 19.4 gr of H110 under my 110 gr TAC-X (Hodgdon's max load). That's the accuracy node, so it's cool, but MV is 2419 with an SD of 18, which is well above the MV Hodgdon quotes. I chickened out on using Barnes data, I load 8 other calibers with their TSX/TTSX bullets, I know they like to run hot, but for my first OCW run I figured to stay sane. I don't care to see extractor wipes and I'd like to use my brass again.
I have a CMMG barrel, but who knows who made it for them, I have had itat least 3 maybe 4 years.

I tried Game Kings in my 300WSM that shoots .400-ish groups with 208gr match bullets and they barely were in the 1"range, and the factory loaded Blitx kings were not much better, so I put pretty much all hunting bullets- weith the exception of tipped bullets- in the "accuracy not expected zone.

I also do not like to use really short bullets in the 300. The shortest bullets I have used for the 3300blk have been the 115gr VMAx, and while they are accurate I do not like them because they are prone to feed issues.

The Speer TNT is kind of my "go to" hunting/accuracy bullet and its long enough to be stable but light enough to be fast and develop energy.

I have never bothered to load anything heavier for my gun. The 125's will drop a deer sized animal DRT and I have used them for 3-gun as well. I am aware that Hornady and Nosler both are working on 115-120-ish grain bullets just for the 300Blk which are longer than the VMAX etc but notsure they have made it to market as yet.

Just because this all brought it to mind, a buddy of mine was swaging the .310 bulk VMAX Hornady bullets meant for 7.62R down to .308 and using them in 300blk with pretty good success.

I only use H110 for 300blk right now, although I do have the new CFEBLK to try when I get round to it.

FYI American Reloading sent an email about 25% of 308 projectiles... May be worth it for those interested in 220g match Kings and a few others
