    45acp bullet seating issues...

Here is the deal, my dad cleaned, deprimed, sized, and reprimed a couple hundred 45acp cases a few years ago.

Well now i have moved back home and got into reloading and i am coming across a fairly frequent problem. [see picture below] The bullet OD is slightly larger that the case mouth ID so the bullet is smashing the cases. the problem is very persistent with my rainier 200gr lead safe bullets. The jacket is extremely soft and will not force the case out of the way.

i am assuming that the case mouths need to be flared, and that this did not happen. If someone can point me in a direction of a fix, or point out our mistake, it would be much appreciated.

    Thus this happens:

I'm gonna watch this thread too. I was gonna ask a similar question, but it happened with lead ones on .38 Special, not my .45ACP (lead, but very prominently lubed with the blue goo.) It would shave off just a wee bit of lead that I then trimmed off. I assume if the .38 special were not lead, it would have "adjusted" the case as above.

The second die in the three die set is the belling die. That needs to be adjusted down more to bell the case mouth. You should adjust the die down until you see (and can feel) the case mouth bell more.

Go to any die manufacturers website and get the directions for the dies that you own.

Correct, you have insufficient amount of belling on your cases. What you want to do is to crank your powder die down into the press several rotations to increase the amount of flare when you are charging the case.

yea whoa how did you last this long without opening the mouths a little

you are in a funny area using fmj i get away with very little belling and if i dont bell very much with lead it just shaves and makes a little lead ring

but the copper coating on soft lead grabs and squishes

the old 230 gr bullets i had worked quite well, it was a bit of a B though. see, i skipped the powder die because i dropped the powder straight from my powder dump. damn, one more step. this is going to be so much easier now, thanks a bunch guys.

Much easier now, it takes more depth than i would think to bell the mouth a little bit. Thanks again.

I measure the case mouth, and then set the belling die until the bullet will stay vertical when placed into the case mouth. It usually works out to .008-.012.

Yeah I've got to bell quite a bit to get the 200gr rainier bullets to seat correctly I must have lost a dozen rounds trying to figure out the minimum I could get away with.

                  Just remember you're not alone
According to this CDC document the firearms related death rate has been surpassed by the poisoning death rate.

buy yourself a kinetic bullet puller to revocer those 'lost' rounds.
