Primer question

I am new to reloading and appreciate some advice from the veterans of this hobby.
I have 3 manuals and for any givin load all 3 list different primers, one says cci then Winchester then federal. Does it really make a difference on the brand of primer so long as it is the correct size i.e. Small pistol?

Primer question

Your manuals list the primer THEY used to work up the listed load. What that means to you is use what ever primer you like or can get and work up your own load. If you start with the lightest load listed and work your way up, just like the manual says, you will find a charge that safely meets your needs.

On low pressure pistol rounds like 45 ACP, 38 etc it makes only a small difference in velocity, but essentially it doesn't matter.

On higher pressure pistol rounds like 40, 10mm, it's best to stick to the recipe in the manual.

Hot 44magnum loads with slow powder will often specify mag primers.

You will be fine swapping brands. Been doing it for many years and many thousands of rounds. You can also use mag primers for any loads and the sky will not fall. That is the only primers I use now. Also never any problems even with max loads. Ball powders should always use mag primers even if you use regular ones for other powders.

In softness it is Federal->Winchester->CCI->Remington.

If you have ignition problems with one type move to a softer one. I use CCI for practice and local matches, Federal for area matches and up.

I have not had any issues at all with CCI though and have loaded tens of thousands.
