    30-06 vs. 7.62x54r

My understanding is that .308 bullets are used for reloading 30-06. I'm gonna use this for my Garand.

However, I also want to reload 7.62x54r for my Mosin Nagant. It appears that .308 bullet is not correct for the 91/30 because the grooves measure 7.92, more like a Mauser bullet! So my question: What are reloaders using for 7.62x54r bullets? And where can I find them.

You'll be looking for .311-.312 bullets. Same as British 303 and Japanese 7.7.

You *can* use 308 though, you just might not get the accuracy you want.

The most important part of reloading for these old boys? You'll want to slug your bore to determine the best bullet. Some folks can use 308 with outstanding accuracy.

On line, my bore is .313 and I use a .312 and it's very accurate.

With any MilSup, I'd suggest slugging the bore before reloading for it.

100% for the Mosin because you never know what you have.
There were so many variations and some are very predictable.

If you have a Mosin and the bore does indeed slug at 7.92, you have a conversion, likely Polish. The bolt face should not accept a 7.62x54R case.

Well, PPU ammo shoots just fine. I thought I read that a 91/30 is designed to have 7.92mm diameter grooves. I have not slugged my mosin, but it is an ex-dragoon. Dark bore but strong rifling. I can ring steel plates at 100 yards with the PPU commercial ammo.

              Thanks.

BTW, Is it me or does anybody else get confused by the way these calibers are named? Especially when 303 British has a bigger diameter than 308 Winchester? Ugh!

Reloading for milsurps - that's part of the fun

I use the .311 Prvi 150gr FMJ bullets in my M91 and M39. The Hornady .312 150gr also work very well. If your bore is worn try the Hornady .312 174gr RN, they have a lot of bearing surface and will improve your groups.

I'm the picture guy. These are amazing rifles, my 1943 nothing special $79 can do a lot more than just ring plates. There was a time there when I shot a lot out of it. Honing my skill. I'm strictly IRON's. with my guns. If you can't take a target down at 400 yrds. you're just not a Ruskie.

I loaded these Hornadys with 47 grains of Hodgdon 4895, smoking out of the barrel at 2900 FPS on the crony. Doing the dollar bill check on this 1943 barrel it was very close to float stage. So I grabbed a socket and a sheet of sand paper and sanded down the stock in the few high spots it needed relief. I wouldn't even try if it was tight. She floats and stings like a bee.

One day after many trips to the range, I was ready for the shot. The cold shot that they never see a coming.

200 yards irons, I call it the Money Shot.

Get to know your rifles and they will be good to you.
