Learned my lesson the hard way

So i was creating my first batch of 223 precision rounds. Hand measuring the powder, trimming them all to the same spec and everything and for some reason i didn't consider checking the round in the chamber of my ar.

So after i've finished around 35 precision rounds and like 70 general rounds i'm like wait..let me test it first.

Test it and i find out that for AR's, the proper headspace isn't between min and max...its basically at the min line in my dillon gauge.



Lesson of the day: Check before plunging in (i always do...but i got overconfident when it came to the 223's) and remember that for AR's, the proper headspace is at or slightly below the min line

It might be worth trying the RCBS case mic.With two pieces that screw together and a graduated scale ,it is easy to see exactly where your at.

[1]...A sizing die is a piece of steel with a hole in it. Within a [+/- tolerance] spec.

Not all holes in sizing dies, match all firearm chambers, of the same caliber. So they are made adjustable.

[2]...A case gage is a piece of steel with a hole in it. Within a [+/- tolerance] spec.

It is not adjustable. And they also, don't match all firearm chambers of the same caliber.

[3]...A firearms chamber is a piece of steel with a hole in it.

Some are adjustable [AR, Savage, etc], most are not. Within a [+/- tolerance] spec.

The ONLY way to assure that ammo from "hole" [1], matches "hole" in [3]. Is to try it in [3]. Until it is "proven" to work in [3] then trying it in [2] for a comparison.

[2] Remains just a piece of steel with a hole in it. Until it is proven to match your chamber to an accurate degree.

Not ALL holes are created equal.

Not ALL [AR or Savage] rifles have a minimum headspaced chamber, as does yours. That is dependent on the guy who screwed the barrel nut on.

Just as not all nonadjustable chambers are the same. That depends on the guy who reamed the chamber.

The more [+/- tolerances] are combined in an overall process. The more likely it becomes that "tolerance stacking conflicts" will occur.
