New reloader, fairly good with tools.

Im setting up my 223 dies and Im short of my OAL by 0.004. Shooting for 2.26 and getting, 2.256. This should be good enough right? I cant get it just right without going over. Im thinking mid range Lee dies, and HNL bushings are limiting in tems of tolerances. Should I spend another 30 minutes getting 0.0001?

And, im planning to load a batch of plastic tipped AMaxes. Why is the OAL in my Lyman book 2.39, over the OAL of 223s?

Load to your chamber or magazine.NUmbers in a book are sometimes worthless.

It depends on what you are loading for? What are your expectations of the rounds you are loading?

I can't answer your question regarding the Hornady Amax's. I don't do anything with Hornady projectiles.

And what highpower said - don't hang your hat exclusively on what the Lymans and the other loading manuals say. They are a great reference, but they aren't the be-all-end-all of loading ammunition.

I like shooting 223 Nosler Ballistic Tip in both 40gr using Benchmark powder (3800 feet per second), and 55gr using CFE 223 powder (3300 feet per second). I buy factory seconds and they shoot just fine. The bullet OAL can vary by 0.005" if the tip gets deformed. They shoot just fine. 40gr rounds are very accurate, fast, and flat shooters.

When your are reloading your round if you measure to the tip of the bullet is can vary a lot. I try to reference COAL to the ogive of the bullet. Much more accurate. At 0.004" undersized you are good. Would not fight it. The next one maybe 0.006" long. Depends on the tip. The tip is the hardest part to swage when making bullets.

I just reloaded last 500 rounds of 223 last night using CFE 223 with 55gr FMJ (M193). Boys shot up all 500 rounds this morning at Hodge Rd near Barstow.
