    Winchester 748

    Probably an easy question.

For .223 loads I usually use Varget, for plinking I was thinking on using some Win 748 for metering reasons.

At the Hodgdon site it doesn't list a start load for Win 748 only max loads. My Lee manual does the same thing.

Why is that? And should I just start at 10% lower as usual?

748 is good because it meters nice however it is more prone to pressure spikes due to temp. If you are shopoting it in the summer try to keep it cool and you'll be fine.

As to your question take their loads and back down 10%. What grain are you loading for?

Lee manual 2nd edition, Varget with a 55gr bullet STARTING LOAD 25.5 grains
it also lists the max grains to the right which I think is 27.5

on a bottle of varget it lists MAX of 27.5 grains, reduce your loads by 10%
      which would be 24.75 grains

for 55 grain bullets, i like 26 grains of 748 w/ cci450 primers, in win brass, works good for me.

                  Do you have a manual?
                  If not grab a couple.

get the LEE 2nd edition, its dirt cheap like 14$ from amazon and full of great info on a hardback book.
Lyman 49th is a good one too

                    Amazon is out of stock

                    midway has it http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpag...eitemid=484416

                      Sierra 24.3 26.7 2800 3100
                      Lyman 26.4 30.0 2894 3281
                      Hodgdon 25.5 27.5 3051 3309
                      Nosler 24.0 26.0 2980 3140
                      Speer 26.0 28.0 2965 3313
                      Hornady 23.0 27.7 2800 3300

These are for win 748. 55GR FMJ at 2.250 OAL 24gr is closer to SAMMI specs with 26gr being NATO. from my research. Sure varies for book to book. START LOW AND WORK UP!
I would advise going with the bullet manufacturers load data
