How many cases have you ruined?

Well today was the first day of actually producing ammo, for me. Thought I had everything set, squared away, bolt down, yada yada. First 2 rounds look great. Nice and staight, good crimp, proper length. Then it starts. 3rd round, squished case. Check everything again. 4th good, 5th good. 6th squished.

So newbs, make sure you trim your cases consistantly, and make sure your dies are set correctly. I think my problem was a little of both. This bag of brass was my first I trimmed. I seem to be doing A-ok now.

This seems to be fun, but a little un-nerving at the same time.

So people that reload, how many cases did you ruin? Before you got the hang of it.

I know I screwed up a lot of lead bullets when I first started because I wasn't expanding enough.

You will continue to ruin cases every now and then. Sometimes it's not your fault. Sometimes, the case or bullet has a flaw that you missed. Just cull them out, check your set up and procede. I end up culling out cases in every step of brass prep and once in a while, I'll loose a few while setting up my seating/crimp dies because I'm not paying close enough attention.

only case i ruined, seated the bullet too far in, which will be majorly unsafe. to combat unsafe i found an unsafe way to deal with the bad round:BB gun. I took one and put the round on the ground, sighted it at about 15M away, hit the primer straight on, BOOM

Mangled cases are a small percentage of case loss. I lose more from case gauge check failures.

                This is for rifle brass

maybe 5 or so,all 223 1 bent like nuts because not enough lube so I stuck a rd in it to look cool.
I also made a few dummy rds, 1 for a keychain/bullet for bullet button.

When I first started reloading I had to toss a few due to over lubricating before resizing.

After 30 years of reloading and I probally have 10k invested in my reloading room I still destroy brass , If you are going to shoot 10,000 rounds a year you are going to loose a few.
It just hurts more when its a wildcat round that took alot of work to make.

It continues to happen very occasionally. A little too much speed on the progressive and a rifle cartridge it misaligned when the ram comes up.
Or a pistol bullet topples off kilter and gets crushed into the case mouth.
No big deal. Just discard the trash, reset and continue.

who knows over the years - I still ruin a few such as trimming too short or making the primer pocket a little deep.
I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.

I've lost, maybe, 100 or so cases over the last 25yrs.. not counting the ones that got trimmer wayyyyyy too short.. I'm talking about the 100 or so ruined by crushing them in the press by rushing my self... not paying attention when seating bullets and seating the bullets almost sideways etc....
