Berry's Preferred Plated Vs. FMJ

Hey peeps, I'm getting ready to get into reloading and I'm starting to purchase primers here and there, 9mm brass, etc. But now I'm gonna start purchasing bullets and I wanted to know what is the difference beside cost, of Berry's preferred plated bullet compared to FMJ bullets? I would greatly appreciate your guy's opinions.

There's a niche for everything. My .38 special runs 158g Xtreme plated amazingly, my 380 auto prefers 105g Bayou bullets, and my 9mm is best with 124g precision deltas.

Best advice for starting new! I personally have only used Berry's 9mm 147gr FMJ. I tried some and they shot great and haven't had to try something new. I would recommend you try them. Are their better bullets out there? Maybe. You'll just have to try a few and see.

The difference is Berrys are plated and will deform on a target much easier than a FMJ. in theory, you can get higher velocity out of a FMJ but in the real world, they are both perform about the same on targets.

I've never tried Berrys but i have tried xtreme bullets. They're allright but i've found them to be a bit dirty. I tend to find small dots of copper all over from where it gets stripped off...

I've used Berry's plated 115 gr RN and 230 gr RN for years. They are a good and inexpensive bullet for plinking.

For my 9mm use, about 1100fps, plated (RMR) works fine.

That is a good deal. I might have to check them out. $86 for 147 grain. How do they shoot 9mmepiphany?

The 115grs shoot very well in my SIG 320 Compact and Springfield EMP.

I think for 90% of most people's handgun shooting, plated (of any brand I have tried) will work fine.

I have found if I am loading for bullseye kind of accuracy, FMJ and some of the better quality lead work better.

i decided a while back to quit buying plated. I have a lot still left to shoot, so I won't be off them for a while, but once I am, it will be Precision Delta (and maybe Zero's as they seem to be more plentiful again) for FMJ and SNS for my cast.

plated need to stay under 1500 FPS or they "can" disintegrate.

I run plated on pretty much everything i can. really cany see a difference.

Xtreme and Berry's are about in the same ball park. I shoot Xtreme quite a bit (in various calibers), because they are available locally.

Generally a good rule of thumb is to use low end jacketed data with plated, or even the max end of cast lead data. I have shot probably several thousand Xtreme 115grainers through my CZ with around 4 grains of Bullseye. Pretty good fartin around load.

I also use Berrys for .40 S&W, .357 Mag, .44 Mag, .500 Mag, .45 LC.

Never had any problems. I load on the low end of the data chart. Shooting paper, steel, bowling pins and other reactive targets just havin' fun.

I have factory defense ammo for, well, defense.
