what causes case dents?

Hey guys,

I reloaded my first batch of .45 with remington large primers and 7.8 grains of ramshot silhouette and 200 grain xtreme plated rn bullets.

On the first 15 rounds, i noticed a dent at the top part of the case where the case was out of round and you could see a fairly hefty dent there. This was shot out of a glock 21. I have never had this happen before with factory ammo.

My question is...what could be causing this. What is strange is that after those 10-15 rounds, the dents stopped happening

Could this be caused by a load that is too hot? The problem is i loaded the .45 at the lower range (not even mid range)...6.5 was the minimum starting load.

Any ideas?

I've never use that powder but shot thousands of .45. If 6.5 if the min, and 7.8 is mid range, what is max?? Usually dents like that are caused on ejection against the gun itself. There are lots of variables at play in how the case ejects, how hard you grip the gun is one of them. Is it possible your grip loosened up or got tighter after the first magazine? Just some thoughts.

Like "ducky" said. Sounds like case mouths getting "port dinged" on the way out of gun.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Glocks can be pretty random with how they throw their brass especially if the load's a little on the light side, but changing almost anything including just dirtying up the gun some or changing your grip could change the timing a bit. The cases can be pretty trashed and still size OK, that's the good news.

45, being a wide mouth case gets dinged up more than the smaller calibers. I get dinged up cases from all of my .45s glock and 1911 flavors.
