Shotshell charge question

I took the dive into shotshell reloading and have a quick question.

Using Remington STS hulls, Win 209 primers, Windjammer wads, Red Dot and 1 1/8oz loads, my lyman manual lists only one charge, 18.0 grains for the above combinations. The only bushing I have on hand right now is throwing about 17.5 grains of RD. Using .5 grains less than the shown amount, would that be acceptable/safe until I get the bushings that throw closer to 18?

Loading shotshells differs from loading cartridges.

You got a shotshell reloading manual ? Read it , if not, buy one , then read it .

Use the load data that is given .

You got a scale for reloading ? use it to get proper charge weight , or just buy from a vendor ( wally world comes to mind ) .

You won't save money , just shoot more by reloading shotshells . Take that advice from someone that shoots and is a member of PITA .

If you know what you're doing and are comfortable with the process and have read all of the information.

You might try a slight ream of the bushing that you have and mark it as such (no longer a standard bushing). No matter which bushing you get, it may not throw the exact weight that is needed per the recipe. Some you may need to ream (it doesn't take much) some you may need to coat the inside with say nail polish to lighten slightly....if you wanna make it concise.

There is a little leeway in the charge weight, but not much. I would stretch a 12 gauge to within 2/10ths up or down and be good with that. If it's for a smaller gauge, say 20, even less and 28 or 410, as close as possible as there is way less wiggle room in those hulls.

I have loaded 17.5 gr of Reddot with out any issues for a pump gun. I can't say if there would be reliability issues for a semi auto. 18 gr is a great load by the way.

Choot em.

1/2 grain reduction of RD on a middle of the road load will have no unsafe effect. I've shot thousands of rounds of [17 gr RD - 1 1//8 oz] loads in AA and Rem hulls.

Many manuals will have at least that much variation between them.

The 17.5 will work fine. If you get a bushing that gets you to 18, don't be surprised if you can't tell the difference.
