    steel case ammo

My buddy just asked if 1000 rounds of .223 for $200.00 of steel cased ammo is a good deal. I told him I do not use or reload steel cases only brass but I would ask the CGN brain trust for opinions.

    What the verdict?

Yeah, that's not a bad price, and the ammo does work just fine. But note edgerly779's admonition above.

I only run steel cased ammo in my wife's M&P15 sport. I cannot recall a malfunction, other than maybe a primer strike, but no ignition type failure. For range fun, you cannot beat it. There is a caveat...In my Larue PredatAR, it does not cycle well only because I have a relatively stiff buffer spring to handle the hotter loads. Wolf/tulammo are known to be a little underpowered, so lighter buffer springs or buffer weights might be needed to cycle reliably.

Steel cased ammo is not necessarily steel core projectiles like green tips. Most Wolf/TulAmmo type steel cased ammo are lead core.

I stock a lot of steel cased ammo for bulk shooting and would suggest everyone do the same.

if its 200 out the door then yea its good. As stated steels usually arent steel cored bullets but double check just to be sure

The problem is less steel core than steel jackets around a lead core. It's not as bad in norcal, but in socal that steel jacked ammo is not usable at most ranges and public lands.

I would suggest the acquisition of said steel cased ammo, which functions just fine in most AR type rifles, be kept well stored until such time as needed. Especially if one doesn't have a least 1k rounds available should a "need" arise. Now is NOT the time in our history to simply buy "range" ammo, and use it. Best saved.

Not in my guns. Good stuff gets shot, junk stays on the shelf.

Nothing wrong with steel-cased ammo as long as that gun likes it. Turns out mine does.

It seems a lot steel cased ammo like Tulamo has Bi-Metal or zinc planted (galvanized) projectiles. Is that hard on the barrel?

If my at won't shoot shoot steel I won't keep it, gotta make sure it's able to shoot all kinds of ammo cuz it's not always going to be brass cased ammo in a less then perfect situation...
