    Where to test loads?

Where do you guys go to test new loads? I want to setup a chronograph to measure velocities and then shoot for groups.

As does Lytle creek allow chronographs.

My local range. I wish I could do it out of my garage/back porch like some folks I know.

mostly outdoor ranges allow it, luckily enough i have a buddy who lets me do my testing indoor.

I can setup an optical chrono at pretty much any outdoor range I have visited...

You can always get something like a magnetospeed if you want to chrono at a pistol range.

I picked up a magnetospeed v3 about 6 months ago and test my loads at indoor and outdoor ranges.

It's easy to set up and so far I've used it testing 22LR from Ruger Single Ten (just to see if it could pick up 40gr bullets), 240gr 44 magnum loads from a 5.5" Ruger Redhawk, and 300gr 45-70 loads from a Marlin 1895.

Not cheap, but you can use it anywhere!

Does the magnetospeed affect accuracy when working up loads? I had a close call (gave my chrony a close shave) and like the idea of the magnetospeed.

                      I go to the mountains.

Most ranges will allow you to set one up. It is best to show up real early before they open up, so they will let you go in front of the benches to set up the chronograph. Mine takes more then the few minutes they give you to check and change your target.

Best thing would be to get a Lab Radar. They set up fast. You can probably just set it on your bench.

Other than shifting the balance a little I didn't see any noticeable difference in accuracy standing two handed at 20 yards with and without the bayonet attached. Even with it clocked sideways to accomodate the ejector rod housings on the revolvers.

It absolutely can change accuracy and POI when attached to something like a rifle.

Pistol I have no idea, its generally too close to really make a difference.

Magnetospeed for indoor rifle I only use to get velocity, SD/ES. I do accuracy testing in a different outdoor range. I don't any indoor ranges that are long enough to even consider doing a accuracy ladder test at.

For more than one reason too... its attached which can cause accuracy issues, and two when doing velocity and SD/ES testing, you really want to keep the chamber dwell time around the same for each round so you don't cook the ammo in a hot chamber which can skew results.
